Template:SpongeBobCharacterSheldon J. Plankton is a fictional character and one-eyed typical cartoon villain in the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a technologically savvy, deep-voiced zooplankter with one central eye—a real-life characteristic of some copepods. Plankton is the smallest of the main characters in the series, able to fit in SpongeBob SquarePants' hand, as well as under Mr. Krabs' foot, as he is only slightly larger than a jelly bean (In fact, he was once mistaken for one in the episode F.U.N.). Plankton is voiced by "Mr." Doug Lawrence.

General

Sheldon, known simply as "Plankton", is Mr. Krabs' tiny, green, oval-shaped, one-eyed business rival on the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. He is a plankter and runs a "competing" (though remarkably unpopular) restaurant called the Chum Bucket, which is located directly across the street from the Krusty Krab. Despite its proximity to the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket itself is rarely seen in the cartoon, except for those episodes in which Plankton also appears.

Plankton is made of "one percent evil, ninety-nine percent hot gas" as revealed by his wife Karen in the episode Plankton! He is Mr. Krab's arch enemy, and is SpongeBob SquarePant's occasional nemesis, though many times SpongeBob is naive of Plankton's evil powers. He once sang the "F.U.N" song, with SpongeBob and made up his own Plankton-esque words to it in "F.U.N". In the same episode, he imagined himself riding a flying jellyfish and destroying Bikini Bottom with zap plasma rays. Plankton is a science wiz, and even knows how to induce thermonuclear fusion. His primary catch phrase is "I went to college!!!", which he usually says while flying back towards the Chum Bucket after one of his schemes to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula has been thwarted, though it has been used in other context. His other catch phrases include "I WIN! I WIN!", "You're all mine you sweet Krabby Patty!", "I wish to rule you!", "Hehhehehaaa!!", and others. Plankton's desire is to put Mr. Krabs out of business and infiltrate the Krusty Krab. All of his nearly successful but ultimately foiled plans involve getting hold of the secret recipe for the copyrighted Krabby Patty, the main food item served at the Krusty Krab, in order to get customers. Plankton frequently plays on the naive trusting nature of SpongeBob to try and get the recipe, along with engaging in various forms of trickery or theft to get either a Krabby Patty or the recipe. These forms have ranged from posing as a psychiatrist for SpongeBob to using a self-controlled robot version of Mr. Krabs. Plankton is almost always scheming away in his laboratory. In the episode "The Algae's Always Greener", Plankton switched lives with Mr. Krabs for a day, and he found he preferred being himself and living with his computer wife. Most of the time it is his own evil desire to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula that causes his plans to fail, such as in the episode "Plankton!", in which his lust over a krabby patty tossed him into his own ingredient analyzing machine where it was determined that he was 1% evil, 99% hot gas. On numerous occasions, he has been seen listening to different versions of the alphabet song, including in the "Employee of the Month" CD-ROM, where he is seen on a bus listening to a metal rock version of the song, realizes it, and flips his vinyl record over to listen to some classical music.

Plankton lives at the Chum Bucket with Karen, his dear computer "WIFE" (Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph), who irritates him to no end. Plankton's first name, Sheldon, is constantly made fun of by his computer wife. Plankton speaks in a deep, melodramatic voice, and enjoys pursuing various forms of villainy, such as Krabby Patty theft and mind control. Plankton not only wants to be the king of fast food, he wants to be supreme commander of the world. Like other Nicktoon villains, he always uses disguises. He disguises himself as a giant sea cucumber, a roach, Mr. Krabs, and even as money used by a robot who sounds like he comes from the "No Weenies Allowed" episode. He is a near-perfect asset to the show, and has his own following among the fans. He made his first appearance in the episode "Plankton!", and has used many guises and plans to steal a Krabby Patty, such as using SpongeBob to try and steal a Krabby Patty, disguising himself as Mr. Krabs to get the secret formula from SpongeBob, and switching lives with Mr. Krabs, in order to get a taste of success. As disclosed in the episode "Plankton's Army", Plankton's first name is Sheldon, which amused Karen to no end. It is also revealed that sometimes Plankton is depressed because of his continual failure (in "F.U.N.", Squidward even tells him he is the most hated creature in Bikini Bottom). He is also depressed because his small stature tends to make him ignored or squished (revealed in "Plankton's Army"). In the same episode, it was also revealed that Plankton has been trying to discover Mr. Krabs' secret formula for the past 25 years.

In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Plankton learns there are 26 letters in the alphabet and executes "Evil Plan 26"(Z), where he steals the crown of King Neptune, delivers it to Shell City (a gift shop located on the surface), and frames the theft on Mr. Krabs, whom Neptune freezes. While Krabs is frozen, Plankton successfully steals the Krabby Patty formula and begins producing Krabby Patties, giving free bucket helmets away with each one. The helmets are, in fact, mind-control devices which Plankton uses to make the citizens bend to his will and change Bikini Bottom to suit his image, renaming the city "Planktopolis." Unfortunately for Plankton, SpongeBob and Patrick manage to retrieve the crown and bring it back to Neptune, and frees everyone under Plankton's control by using the power of rock and roll. Plankton is stomped on and soon arrested, taken away by the authorities, but vows to return and destroy everyone. Sometime after that, he got out of jail and appeared in the episodes "Fear of a Krabby Patty, "Krabs vs. Plankton", "Enemy In-Law", "Patrick SmartPants", "Wishing You Well" , "New Leaf", Best Frenemies and Friend or Foe.

Plankton's size varies through episodes. Sometimes he is microscopic, and other times he is about knee high.

Family

Plankton has various relatives, whom he enlists help from in "Plankton's Army" while attempting to retrieve the Krabby Patty secret formula. Relatives include (but are not limited to): Clem, Zeke, Rufus, Jeke, Billy Bob, Billy Jim, Billy Billy Bo Willy Banana Fanna Fo Filly, Toad, Enis, and Rainchild. His relatives, quite strangely enough already, seem to be a big bunch of friendly, gullible, multicolored, root-beer crazed, uneducated hillbilly plankton, whom Plankton himself barely even recognizes. Unlike his relatives Plankton got his ingenious mind from going to college. In this same episode he stops trying to steal the krabby patty formula when Mr. Krab leads him to believe that the secret ingredient is plankton.

His Relationship with Mama Krabs

In the episode, "Enemy In-Law," Plankton once dated Mama Krabs, Eugene Krabs' mother, after hearing endless complaints from his computer wife, at first out of genuine love, but in the end as part of a plot to get the formula. He tries to capture (and then charm) Mama Krabs with a giant robot, but later on his plan backfires when she falls in love with the robot instead of him.

Band

In the episode Band Geeks, Plankton, without much conflict, placidly participates in the band. At the performance he plays a keyboard. During the first rehearsal, however, he is shown with a triangle, and, later a harmonica. When Squidward asks if anyone has experience playing instruments, Plankton responds with "Do instruments of torture count?"

Rivalry

Mr. Krabs and Plankton were once college room-mates, but they slowly developed a rivalry. This was revealed in the comics to have been caused by, being stepped on by Mr. Krabs (which did not annoy him at all), being closed inside Mr. Krabs' book (which aggravated him a little) and Mr Krabs going out with his date and Plankton's date (which started their rivalry). Plankton views Mr. Krabs as greedy (which he is), and Mr. Krabs views Plankton as a thief (which he is). The episode Dunces and Dragons is a time-travel episode which implies that Plankton's fanatic desires for Krabby Patty and rivalry with with Mr. Krabs goes back generations to his ancestor Planktonimor. Planktonimor is defeated by SpongeBob and Patrick when they travel back in time.

Video games

  • In SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Plankton appears as the main antagonist of the game. In the game, he makes an attempt to take over Bikini Bottom and taking the Krabby Patty formula by creating a robot machine called the Duplicatotron 3000. After he creates the robots, the robots do not obey him, because he forgot to set the switch from Do not Obey to Obey. Plankton decided to convince SpongeBob (with the help of Patrick and Sandy) to do all the work of destroying the robots, because SpongeBob thought the situation was his fault.
  • In SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge Plankton has a brief cameo, in which he yells at Spongebob for stealing his time machine. "Blast you SpongeBrat! You have found my secret time machine! Well whatever you do, make sure you fill it up before you bring it back!

Plans

The following is a list of plans Plankton set up in order to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula, or an attempt to dominate the world.

Regrading Krabby Patty Formula
  1. Plankton first tried to steal the formula 25 years before "Plankton's Army", namely by asking for it.
  2. Plankton uses "pretty please" seconds after his first plan.
  3. Plankton tries to sneak in as a roach in a costume, but Mr. Krabs crushes him.
  4. Plankton uses "super science" by drinking a chemical and turning into a roach, but Mr. Krabs crushed him once again.
  5. Plankton holds a sign reading "I am not a roach!" but he gets chrushed yet again.
  6. Other plans that included: A rubber duck and another one involving a lever and Plankton eventually gets flushed down the toilet.
  7. In "Plankton!", after SpongeBob refuses to get the Krabby Patty for him, Plankton decides to take control of his body, get the Krabby patty, and take it back to the Chum Bucket so he can figure out the formula.
  8. In "Culture Shock", Plankton uses "magic" to make a Krabby Patty disappear at a Krusty Krab talent show.
  9. In "F.U.N.", Plankton gets inside of a Krabby Patty and escapes the Krusty Krab. However, when SpongeBob annoys him, he gives it up.
  10. In "F.U.N.", Plankton befriends SpongeBob in order to get the Krabby Patty.
  11. In "Imitation Krabs", Plankton pretends to a contest announcer and tried to get Spongebob to tell the formula.
  12. In "Imitation Krabs", Plankton pretends to be Mr. Krabs by making a robot of him. He gets rid of Mr. Krabs by rolling a penny on the floor. The penny rolls out of the Krusty Krab, with Mr. Krabs following it, begging it to come back.
  13. In "Welcome to the Chum Bucket", after Krabs loses a card game against him, Plankton decides to have SpongeBob making a Krabby Patty, instead of stealing the formula. Plankton later admits that he cheated.
  14. In "The Algae's Always Greener", Plankton planted himself in a ketchup bottle, hoping someone will squeeze him onto a patty. Old Man Jenkins squeezes it into the air and shoots him into a wall and he fails.
  15. In "Krusty Krab Training Video", Plankton steals a Krabby Patty by using a robotic machine built in, to escape the Krusty Krab.
  16. In "Plankton's Army", Plankton hid inside a dollar that a robot customer gave Mr. Krabs.
  17. In "Plankton's Army", after Plankton gets tired of being squashed by Mr. Krabs, he decides to make an army of his own. Plankton almost succeeds until he realizes that the formula book says to have 4 heaping pounds of freshly ground plankton (The book was a fake).
  18. In "Fear of a Krabby Patty", Plankton indirectly forces the Krusty Krab to stay open 24 hours, thereby making SpongeBob afraid of Krabby Patties. He tries to hypnotize SpongeBob into giving him the formula.
  19. In "Krabs vs. Plankton" Plankton countersues Mr. Krabs for not having a wet floor sign.
  20. In "Enemy In-Law" after a date with Mama Krabs', he finds out that she has the formula, and so he proposes a marriage.
  21. In "New Leaf", Plankton elaborates an incredibly convoluted and bizarre plan to get the formula: he pretends to reform and becomes friends with Krabs, who gives him the formula as a token of their friendship, believing he will not read it. However, when Plankton opens it, it says "Gotcha - Krabs".
  22. In "Best Frenemies", Mr. Krabs gave Plankton a Krabby Patty out of boredom, and then chased him.
  23. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, after Plankton steals King Neptune's crown and tries to keep Mr. Krabs framed for the theft, SpongeBob and Patrick return six days later from the forbidden Shell City with it. After Plankton is stepped on all over and flattened to a pancake, he was arrested and sent to the Institution for the Criminally Tiny (surpassing for ternary). Since the movie takes place after the series, it is unknown what happened to Plankton or the Chum Bucket after his arrest.

Other Plans

  1. In "Walking Small", after the beachers refuse to leave Goo Lagoon to construct the Mega Bucket, Plankton teaches SpongeBob how to be aggressive. He planned on having fun with him. In the end, it is revealed that Plankton is only using him to get SpongeBob make the beachers leave so he can make the mega bucket.
  2. In "The Algae's Always Greener", Plankton used his "Switch-lives-just-to-know-what-it's-like-omagrifier" to switch lives with Eugene H. Krabs, so he can own a successful restaurant. When he finds out how hard it is to be Mr. Krabs, he changes back.
  3. In "Snowball Effect", Plankton plans to harness the energy of the snow, and take over the world, but there was too much snow and it covered Plankton.
  4. In "Enemy In-Law", Plankton builds a giant robot to kidnap Bikini Bottomites and bring them to the Chum Bucket to eat food.
  5. In "Wishing You Well", Plankton uses the wishing well to wish to be big enough to crush his enemies. This is the only plan that Plankton succeeded in.
  6. In Creature from the Krusty Krab, plankton enlarges a krabby patty crumb, but accidentally brings it to life.
