The truth seems to lead Sam to 5637 Monroe Street, a rundown house filled with junk. He picks the lock and steps cautiously into the dark and apparently abandoned place. But not quite cautiously enough because in the next second, he has tripped a wire attached to a hand grenade. With hardly time to yell, Sam is blown apart. Luckily for him, the explosion is merely the nightmarish premonition of a twenty-something female psychic, named Ava Wilson.

Plot synopsis

Template:Spoilers The episode starts in a psychariatry room. A man is talking about how he is having migraines progressing into nightmares. He also describes he has electrical powers, which was accidentally used to kill a cat. The psychariatrist doesn't believe him. The man elaborates on the nightmares he has, pertaining to the yellow-eyed man, who tries to persuade him to kill others. He refuses to. The next scene sees him walking down a slope to get to his car. Seeing a knife's reflection in the window, he turns around. He gets stabbed, and the scene cuts to the title card.

Picking up from the end of the last one where Dean finally reveals to Sam what John told him right before he died. In Dean's words, the secret is, "He said that I had to save you. That nothing else mattered. And if I couldn't, I have to kill you, Sammy."

Sam becomes angry and demands that they hunt for more clues to the meaning behind the paternal warning. When Dean argues that they should lay low for safety, Sam steals a car in the middle of the night and sneaks off in search of the truth.

Luckily for him, the explosion is merely the nightmarish premonition of a twenty-something female psychic, named Ava

Sam, alive and well for now, goes to see Ellen and Ash at the Roadhouse to get information. The former informs him that Jo has gone off hunting on her own while the latter sends Sam to Lafayette, Indiana, where another psychic who had a personal history similar to Sam's was recently stabbed and killed.

In Indiana, Sam finds out that the psychic, revealed as Scott Carey, had been seeing a psychiatrist before his death. He also confirms his suspicions that they are both connected to the yellow-eyed demon. Returning to his motel room at the end of the day, Sam is approached by Ava Wilson who warns him that she has seen him get blown up and the Indiana psychic get stabbed in her dreams.

Ava is a lovable secretary who is engaged to be married in eight weeks and wants little to do with all the paranormal weirdness. But she is moved by curiosity as well as Sam's earnestness and helps him distract the shrink while Sam steals Scott's patient file.

Tipped off by Ellen, Dean arrives in Lafayette to spy on Sam who is holed up in his motel room with Ava. They are listening to a tape of Scott telling his shrink that a demonic war is brewing and all the special children like Sam and Ava will be fighting on the Demon's side.

Just then, someone starts shooting at Sam and Ava. Dean rushes to the roof of the building across from the motel and stops Gordon Walker before he can kill Sam with a high powered rifle. In the ensuing fight, Dean is knocked out.

Sam calls Dean for help but it turns out that Dean is the one in need of rescuing. Tied to a chair, with a gun to his head and Gordon listening on, Dean asks Sam to meet him at 5637 Monroe Street, the scene of Ava's vision.

While waiting for Sam to turn up, Gordon assures Dean that he is doing the world a favor by killing Sam and all the other demonic soldiers. Gordon admits to killing Scott for good measure and he has also booby trapped the house with a second grenade to make sure Sam doesn't cheat death.

Gordon gags Dean and they wait as Sam creeps into the house. One explosion is followed by another and Dean is overcome with anguish, certain that his little brother is killed. Gordon goes to check the gruesome aftermath but there is the click of a trigger behind his head. It's Sam. The two struggle and Sam knocks Gordon out.

The brothers are reunited. Dean wants to finish Gordon off but Sam tells him he has already taken care of the maniac. They walk away from the house but haven't gotten very far when Gordon comes out with guns blazing. Sam and Dean take cover and watch in amusement from their hiding place as police roar up to arrest Gordon. Sam had called them in with an anonymous tip about an armed and dangerous murder suspect who owns a carload of weapons.

Sam and Dean hit the road. Dean wants to quit hunting and run away with Sam so that he can keep his younger brother safe from his terrible destiny. Sam will have none of it and the brothers reach a friendly agreement to keep on doing their jobs.

Sam calls Ava repeatedly to find out if she has gotten safely home. There is no reply. Sam has a bad feeling so the Winchesters go to Ava's house in Peoria. There is demonic sulfur on the window sill and on the bed lies Ava's fiance, butchered to death. Sam finds Ava's ring but the girl herself has vanished.

    • In the first part of the season finale, All Hell Breaks Loose, Sam finds Ava, who turns out to be systematically killing others like themselves in order to 'win' a competition. She is eventually killed in the process of trying to kill Sam.

Production notes

  • The gun used by Gordon when he attempts to assassinate Sam is a Heckler & Koch G36 fitted with a scope and a suppressor.
  • When Sam inspects the roof where Gordon was firing from, four cartridge cases are shown while Gordon is shown firing only three shots.
  • There would have been no way to tell that the rounds had been subsonic by looking at the case, although one could logically deduce it as the rounds did not break the sound barrier.
  • To advertise the series' return from hiatus, the CW aired a promo containing sequences from this episode and subsequent ones set to the song "God's Gonna Cut You Down," as performed by Johnny Cash.

References

  • Sam yells "... am I supposed to go dark side or something?!", a reference to Star Wars.
  • While distracting the therapist, Ava mentions the urban legend of Pop Rocks mixed with Coke.
  • Sam downplays his knowledge of firearms by claiming to have been a fan of police drama T. J. Hooker.
  • Dean uses the code word "Funkytown" to let Sam know that he is being held at gunpoint.
  • Gordon gives Dean a scenario that if he had "...young Hitler riding shotgun (in Dean's car)" and he knew what Hitler was going to become, Dean would "take him out."
