Airlines

Douala Airport has been known to suffer power outages. Petty theft is not uncommon and travellers should be aware of their surroundings. Security is poor even by African standards. A Taxi stand is located just outside the arrival area just after customs. Several touts circulate in an around the airport and tourists are known to have been harrassed and even threatened with assault. Expect to have luggage searched by hand before clearing the customs area. Some currency exchange booths and "agents" are located in the departure sections and rates can be negotiated. A "fixer" (RN) who is well known to students of St Josephs College Sasse and Sacred Heart College, Mankon frequents the baggage arrival area. Among his stories are of a deceased wife who died from AIDS, a recent diagnosis of HIV infection, 4 daughters who live with their Aunt in England, and a claim to have earned a masters degree from the University of Ibadan.

Travellers may expect to declare whatever food stuff they are leaving the country with for which a "tax" is collected. Be careful not to carry to much hand luggage (>10 kg) as this is a source of extortion by airport employees. Many departure lounges are air conditioned. Expect a second search at the departure lounge to be conducted by airlines staff. Immigration officials have also be known to take bribes.
