The United States Air Force's 398th Air Expeditionary Group is an air expeditionary unit. The Group participated in U.S. operations in Iraq and Liberia during 2003.

Mission

The 398th is one of the Air Force's expeditionary units. These units are activated under temporary orders by the owning MAJCOM for a specific purpose or mission. Once the subject mission is completed, these units are inactivated by the owning MAJCOM.

History

The 398th Air Expeditionary Group has no modern (post-1947) successor organizations (wing or group), however it assumed the World War II-era 398th Bombardment Group lineage and history.

During Operation Iraqi Freedom the title 398 AEG was given to a collection of units and personnel operating from Souda Bay, Greece.

Later in 2003, the unit participated in Operation Shining Express in Liberia, a rescue operation directed by United States European Command to evacuate civilians from parts of Liberia affected by that country's civil war. Among the groups contributions was delivering a United States Marine Corps security forces team.
