Since its inception the Sun Network had the blessing and support of the DMK, in line with the general trend in South India where large media houses are directly or indirectly controlled by political parties. Sun TV is a regional Tamil language Indian cable television station. It is the flagship channel of the Chennai-based Rs 16000-crore Sun Network. It was the first fully privately owned Television channel in India when it emerged in 1993. It remained privately held until 2006 when it was listed on the two main Indian stock exchanges - the National Stock Exchange of India and Bombay Stock Exchange.

Its serials and soaps have generated the maximum TRP rating for viewership all over India, making it the most popular channel in India[citation needed].

Popular programs such as Arasi and Kolangal are its major attractions[citation needed].
