Don't.
The most poetic refusal of a romantic advancment I have yet recieved. Sure beats the usual "Feck off, you *&?^ing £#&*hole."

Hello!
Hi Ceoil, you're probably super busy with articles, but my addition to the Moors Murders page (Very Friendly) was removed, and I am curious as to why? It is in the same vein as the Smiths pop-culture reference above it, which has no citations or anything either, and thus must also be taken as-is. I've never heard the Smiths song, but I believe that what was written about it, and it's relation to the Moors Murders to be true, so why can't the Throbbing Gristle comment also exist? <span style="font-size: smaller;" class="autosigned">—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.57.136.25 (talk) 22:26, 30 September 2008 (UTC)</span><!-- Template:UnsignedIP --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Hello, you don't know me. Love the albums articles, wiki, Nick Drake, etc. I'm relatively new; looking for some fresh eyes to take a look at this for some feedback on the introduction (the rest is still very rough.) Sliding this in here (delete if you want) - I commented on the one far. I've been working on many 18th century poetry pages. However, I felt that I should start with the writers first. It might take a while. But yeah, we should be able to remedy the lack of poetry FAs. Ottava Rima (talk) 21:27, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
:What aspects do you need? I started as a Romanticist. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:29, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

I wrote up some notes for you (i.e. things you can add) to help a future expansion: here. Its not much, but still. I have more, just not right here. Also, you will need a "critical reception" section added to the end. This will have contemporary and recent critical views. Normally, I would suggest beginning with a "background" - a section talking about what information went into it and publishing details. Then the actual work, where you can describe the work, summarize, etc, then talk about themes. The "Lucy" section should make up the background, and there should be a main template linking to Lucy poems as a whole. There is significant information on each individual poem, so they do need separate sections.

Also, the "Cantos" are a mess. There really should be separate pages for each section. Any specific help, just tell me what you want/need on my talk page and I will provide. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:24, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
:Btw, I do mean exactly what I said in far. If someone turned in a paper like that, I would question if they would even be allowed in college, let alone if they were capable of performing research. There is nothing salvageable. Its rather tainted beyond restoration. I'm confused how the page could even have a cult following behind it. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:29, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
::You can see from my one correction how sloppy and inadequate the language is. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:38, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
:Do you see my point about it being 11 separate published works, and how that causes major problems, especially when critical theory treats the individual ones in such depth and detail that it cannot be covered? Are you willing to put 11 main templates and move content over, summarize, include summaries of the critical theories and interpretations for each section, along with massive critical theory and interpretation of the works as a whole? Thats a large piece to bite off. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:23, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
::When does Pound's copyright give out? We can take images of the first set of Cantos, because they were published before 1935. I don't know about the rest. Also, excerpts would be needed in a page about them. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:28, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
:::Well, thats why I proposed removing it so there wouldn't be the stress, then letting everyone take the time to rebuild it from the ground up. It would be a slow process. I'm sure I'd have to stop by the Library of Congress a few times to check on things for the page, and that will take a while. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:46, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. However, we need to start working on separate pages for the individual Cantos so we can start building a consensus for the summary styles to put into each section. That way we can actually include the bulk of research, publication information, etc, without increasing the page beyond 200k (which it looks to be heading towards now). Ottava Rima (talk) 01:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
:I mean post adding references and appropriate criticism (FA would require adequately reflecting the dominant theory, which is very expansive and would require quite a lot of information). This is also assuming not to split the individual Cantos (with summaries and the rest, then the page should only be 80k or so). ==History of Limerick==
Regarding the History of Limerick, now on FAR, I don't know when you might be able to get the Spellissy book but I have some other issues with it that I already put to User:DrKiernan but he has not replied yet. Based on his observations about comprehensiveness there are some quite large gaps but there also seems to be quite a bit of general Irish history thrown in that overshadows or overwhelms the Limerick story, where there is one. Maybe some of the general history should be trimmed out or reduced, for instance, the Irish Famine section seems to be more about the Cromwellian and Georgian period with only 3 sentences about the famine itself; perhaps a rename is in order there. As mentioned in a post on the talk page there is no mention of the Tudor re-conquest of Ireland and the Desmond Rebellions either.

Just today I found an extract of the Limerick entry from the Lewis's Topographical Directory of Ireland here which may be somewhat useful. In the meantime I am slowly working on finding references and will also try to expand the earlier period per DrKiernan's comments, but I will be happy to get any other advise, especially on the above points. In working on a few of these FARs, I realise it is so much more difficult to reference other peoples work at a later time than ones own around the time or writing! (I post in one place to keep a discussion together, so am watching this page for a while). TIA ww2censor (talk) 17:45, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
:I'm glad to see you working on this ww2, but I'm in the same boat, have two FARs (both proving more difficult than anticipated) and am hoping for two FAC within a month or so. Still, I'd hate to see this go. I would'nt be much use in adding content here, but I would be willing to chip in with MOS, c/e, and cites (my Grandfather has a few of the books, and I have access to the UCC library) at a later date. I've watchlisted now the page and the FAR, so lets see. ( <font color="green">Ceoil</font> <font color="E45E05">sláinte</font> 19:42, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

date-autoformatting
Yes, it's a disease, isn't it. The script is dead-easy and works very well, but is still under trial; you'll need to scrunitise the diff afterwards to ensure that there were no screw-ups. Usually there aren't, but of course removal exposes the underlying inconsistencies in formatting within an article—inconsistencies that I believe should be exposed, since all of our readers out there see them, and they need to be fixed.

The script also needs to be applied judiciously and with sensitivity, at least at this early stage—possibly with a prior warning on the talk page if you foresee trouble: there's a band of people who say they don't care whether autoformatting is used or not, but find the fact that MOSNUM no longer encourages autoformatting insufficient to support the use of a script to remove it. ==Clarifying ...==

Hi Ceoil,

Just to be clear: I appreciate what you are doing on the Cantos. I really do. A lot. My commentary elsewhere is more regarding what I see as a general problem on Wikipedia regarding the increasing bureaucratisation of our processes, particularly GA/FA/GAR/FAR, a situation which has made it much harder to contribute content than it was a couple years ago. If my rhetoric goes a little over the top, it's because that's what you do on that page; it's like drinking in a pub and crying with your friends. What's happened on Wikipedia in the last several years is most upsetting to me and I have no idea what to do about it: it seems that you can no longer stick together two words without being accused of original research, and if you do stick those words together you get accused of plagiarism. Navigating the crack between Scylla and Charybdis is just so much more stressful than before, and we lose lots of good contributors because of the difficulty. But please carry on. You're doing great work. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 14:50, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

:Yep. You've voluntarily taken on the most difficult position. Others hurl rocks from the sidelines, which is always easier. Hm, see No. 68, which I appear to have violated myself, oh well. I'm no expert on the Cantos and its critical and scholarly sources: I've only read the poem, parts again and again (first encountering the Pisan Cantos when I was about 21, I could tell there was something immensely powerful there, but beyond my understanding at the time -- it was one of those things I knew I would have to come back to some day -- like my first encounter with the late Beethoven quartets). I can read the article for style and structure, but I'm really just a well-read amateur, which is why I'm usually restricting myself to music and earth sciences these days, topics where I have credentials. As of bigger picture issues -- at the moment I don't feel a whole lot of hope, but if people like you help out one article at a time, this is all good. == Painting (1946) ==

My response on my talk page (lk in my sig, below) did not reflect what i now know: i now realize that what you find ugly was not the word "Ugh" in my summary but the tag itself, and now i see (as a result of following my lk, hand-keyed from memory, to be sure had the valid lk) that you removed that tag. Cleanup is one of a very large family of "templated" tags for maintenance purposes, of long standing and laboriously adjusted to achieve WP's stated purposes. It's too bad they don't meet your aesthetic standards, and the removal fully deserves the presumption of another innocent beginner error. But further removal of them for that reason will result in vandalism sanctions against you. <br>--Jerzy•t 22:36, 26 July 2008 (UTC)<br>

: You didn't explain what about the article needed cleaning up, which takes away whatever tiny bit of merit tagging the article might have achieved in the first place. Your threats of "vandalism sactions" are pretty sad—this comes from an apparent administrator speaking to an editor who's been volunteering here for years? Perhaps you weren't aware that some editors consider the quick-tagging of articles with templates itself to be "vandalism"—so please don't be so sure of yourself in this regard. Your approach is laughable, and the reason that it has the benefit of numbers on Wikipedia today is largely because it has driven away most of the editors who don't treat articles as pieces of meat. (Hey, Ceoil, considering this started with a Bacon painting, that's pretty funny hey!) Nor does Ceoil deserve two sarcastic comments about his being a "beginner" (one on your page, one on his). == On a novel that never has any action ==

In advance of any dispute, take a look at The History of Sir Charles Grandison before and after my edits. I can explain in detail each one. Ottava Rima's talk page seems a bit pugnacious about my attempt to smooth the language and grammar in the article, so, before that dissatisfaction turns to yet another Issue, I ask you to review the changes. If you have questions about specific changes I made, I'll be happy to answer.

The only thing that remains very ill, to me, is a statement attributed to Peter Sabor that Fielding's novels, such as Tom Jones and Amelia had vicious characters rewarded. Well, Richardson's feelings about Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones were precisely thus. He thought both featured heroes who were nasty. The reason for that is that Fielding meant them to be offensive to an overly fussy sensibility such as he detected in Pamela. However, during the writing of Tom Jones, Fielding began to develop his theory of the "good natured man." We can see the debut of this character in his Life and Death of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great, where the character of Heartsfree is a good natured man. Squire Allworthy (not the hero of TJ) is similarly good natured. Fielding was thinking that there is a sort of moral essence to people, that some people do have kind natures, while others have nasty natures, and still others have natures that are malleable. His hero, Tom, has a good nature but has bad circumstances, and so he means well and does ill, but Squire Allworthy has a good nature and a good life and achieves benevolence everywhere. In Amelia, Fielding's last novel, he worked up the "good nature" further. The heroine and hero of that novel are so darned good that they're boring. Their minds are impenetrable paragons of virtue. Like Sir Charles Grandison itself, the novel was not well loved by later ages. In the immediate aftermath, it was, because that was the time of the Sentimental Novel, and these two novels were important parts in creating that beast (weepy people and gushing naifs). Thus, I do not believe, myself, that Peter Sabor included Amelia. If he did specifically name that novel as an example of a rough and tumble hero, then the statement needs considerable explanation. It is "likely to be challenged." I would challenge Dr. Sabor himself, in fact, if he said it, and I do challenge Ottava Rima to either excise that third title or be expansive on why it's included.

That's the only issue that I see as remaining. Otherwise, Ottava Rima doesn't like my changes, calls them errors, etc., but my conscience is quiet. Please review, when time permits. Geogre (talk) 13:53, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

At Swim-Two-Birds
Hi - if you have anything substantial to add to At Swim-Two-Birds, please let me know. I am fairly tired of being the only person who has done any work on it in the past few weeks, especially since it's not even my favourite novel by that particular author. The article needs feedback to get it to the point where it might get GA status, but right now - apart from a few well-sourced comments about the unreliability of the translations - I am close to burnout on it. : Yeah, Ceoil is a good person to ask. He doesn't respect the unwritten "nominator–reviewer" bullshit that requires everyone on our open, collaborative project to pencil in their smallest complaints on the FAC page instead of just fixing it. Oh, that's too much work, the reviewers say, and not their job ... but they can write up many-bullet-pointed reviews and come back four more times to accuse the nominator of being defensive. Good FAC review isn't less work; but good FAC review earns more attention than "just fixing it", and the reviewers want to "widen their footprint" regarding their pet subject. So successful are they in their endeavour, that, years on, we have horrendously long and contrived FAC pages. Yup, that footprint's so wide now that, years on, the same pet subjects must be mentioned by one of the same four or five editors on every FAC. One wonders where the "average reviewer" disappeared to. Well, he realized that it wasn't enough that he thought the article was among the best work that wikipedians are doing, so he shut up. When the job description is "critique to death", fascinatingly little of importance will get past the bureaucrat in question. <small>Oops—I was NOT referring to SandyG here. After Samuel Johnson, I think I want to rework Drapier's Letters quickly (I have three other books that I can incorporate in) and then bring this new page The Plays of William Shakespeare‎ up. They should only take about a week at most each, as they are smaller, require less comprehension, and they don't need to be utterly perfect as Johnson. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 00:42, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

I forgot - next week, I can pick up some more books about She Dwelt among the Untrodden Ways and help you work on it if you would like. That one, Drapier's Letters, The Plays of William Shakespeare, Byron's bio, Keats's bio, and Smart's bio. I hope to put these together over the next month (I can do it :) ). It would be nice to get a Wordsworth poem to GA/FA. Ottava Rima (talk) 02:04, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
:We could work on a deal where I work with you on your choice, then vice versa, etc etc, and start going through these poetry and literature pages. I think we could finish them all by the year 3078 :). Ottava Rima (talk) 22:59, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
:To be honest, the page is only 15k, and could easily be used to cover all Lucy poems, including a section at the beginning for background (background to writing the piece) and a subsection with Lucy, and then a seperate section for each, then a critical review for them, then a legacy mentioning each of the takes. Really, all you would have to do is just add in the other poems, expand the criticism and background information a little, and its complete. It would make it easier to push more Wordsworth poems through than having to do each individually. :D Ottava Rima (talk) 23:13, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Three Witches
If you mean the ones from Macbeth:

Johnson as Critic - on Macbeth.

"In order to make a true estimate of the abilities and merit of a writer, it is always necessary to examine the genius of his age, and the opinions of his contemporaries. a poet who should now make the whole action of his tragedy depend upon enchantment, and produce the chief events by the assistance of supernatural agents, would be censured as transgressing the bounds of probability, be banished from the Theatre to the nursery, and condemned to write fairy tales instead of tragedies; but a survey of the notions that prevailed at the time when this play was written, will prove that Shakespeare was in no danger of such censures, since he only turned the system that was then universally admitted to his advantage, and was far from overburdening the credulity of his audience.

The reality of witchcraft or enchantment, which, though not strictly the same, are confounded in this play, has in all ages and countries been credited by the common people, and in most by the learned themselves. These phantoms have indeed appeared more frequently, in proportion as the darkness of ignorance has been more gross; but it cannot be shown, that the brightest gleams of knowledge have at any time been sufficient to drive them out of the world...."

There is more. :) here for an online edition. I have the page numbers if you find anything worth mentioning. Ottava Rima (talk) 19:50, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

: The Public Enemy y-link... they were from the generation when I sorta listened to this stuff. Thanks for reminding me they were rap geniuses compared to the stuff these days. This led me down a strange memory lane which first went to Metallica's video for One, which is a horribly moving thing (this coming from the guy who once called himself "Isolation Booth", so maybe it's worse for me). On the subject of pain, I was then reminded of a "jazz" tune by Roland Kirk, the man who could play a few saxophones at once, called "The Inflated Tear". I've never heard pain expressed like this in music; he was blind and had kidney failure, I think, at the the time. (I can't find a music link, unless you're in the US, which doesn't help us .) Once you realize that the average user tends to degrade even the simplest cogent articles as articles; that very few people have any appreciation for the text as the fundamental of an "encyclopedia"; and that all kinds of structures are now in place for this to be permanent, you have to forget about adding to wikipedia in a meaningful way. When are we working on Wordsworth? If you don't remind me or get in touch with me, I will just whip up a sample page for the Lucy poems this weekend in my subspace and dump a large amount of notes on the talk page for you. I'm thinking about doing these (in this order) - Wordsworth Lucy poems, Byron page, Shelley's Prometheus Unbound, Keats's Hyperions, Blake's Jerusalem, Keats's bio, some Byron poem, then Blake's bio. 8 pages that we are going to work on towards GA/FA status. These must be done before the end of November. :P Then we can double back and hit other things. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Okay, then, I'll dump notes on a subpage for Wordsworth that includes what M H Abrams says on the poems, Harold Bloom says, and Geoffrey Hartman says, plus many lesser known scholars. I'll also prep what I think a combination page could look like. That way, you can use it to base your ideas and you wont really need me for much else.
