Mahesana pronunciation is a city and a municipality in Mehsana district in the Indian state of Gujarat.

City

This is one of the largest city in North Gujarat followed by Patan and Palanpur. It is situated near Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. It houses the Dudhsagar Co-operative milk dairy and has one of the highest milk collections in India. It is also famous for its local "Mehsani" buffalo breed.

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited' has a very big establishment at Mehsana.
Also Euresia's First and India's Biggest Water Park ' Shanku's Water Park' is situated at Mehsana. It has the biggest iron and steel market in India.

Mehsana is home to an educational institution called Ganpat Vidhyanagar or, officially, Ganpat University. Disciplines within the university include engineering, pharmacy, management, higher computer studies, military school for girls, central board school.

Mehsana is now also slated to have airport the first privately-operated airport in Gujarat which will function as an air flight training centre of Ahmedabad Aviation and Aeronautics Ltd. The flight training centre, which has come up at an abandoned airport, has been developed by the Gujarat Government and AAA Ltd in an area spread over 64 acres and has cost Rs four crores. An agreement for this was signed by the two sides during `Vibrant Gujarat Investors Summit-2007'.

Geography

Mahesana is located at 23°36′N 72°24′E / 23.6°N 72.4°E / 23.6; 72.4[1]. It has an average elevation of 81 metres (265 feet). It is approximately 75 km away from the mega City, Ahmedabad. Some of the famous places of Mehsana are Raj Mahal Road, Pilaji Gunj, Gayatri Temple, Para area, Nagalpur, Shri Sarvajanik Kelvani Mandal, Naalanda High School, Wide-Angle Multiplex Theatre, T.B. Road, Ruturaj Flats, Chakeshwari Flats,Vasupujya Flats, Tirupati Bunglows(behind Dudh Sagar Dairy), Apolo Enclave, Simandhar Derasar,Swaminaryan Temple,Radhanpur Crossroad,Bansari Towbship, Sahara Township, and Harinagar Society.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Mahesana had a population of 2,50000. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mahesana has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 72%. In Mahesana, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Dudhsagar Dairy
The Mehsana District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. Mehsana, popularly known as Dudhsagar Dairy, is a member of the state-level Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. Anand Dudhsagar Dairy is the largest dairy in Asia, processing on an average 1.41 million kilograms of milk each day. It has established a network for procuring milk from 4,500,000 milk producers through 1150 village milk cooperatives. Dudhsagar Dairy is a technology pioneer in its industry, using information technology to simplify, automate, and improve operational efficiency.

Other details

Modhera's Sun temple, which is around 20-30 km away from Mehsana, is over 900 years old and is a great example of India's temple architecture.

Swaminarayan Temple, located near Radhanpur Chokdi in Mehsana is a milestone for its extraordinary architecture and its design.

Thol Wildlife Sanctuary with an area of 7 km² is in this district is located near Ahmedabad. It is home to variety of wildfowl, flamingos, gray pelicans, black ibis and other wetland birds.

Wide-Angle Theatre in Nagalpur suburb is the first Multiplex theatre in Mehsana and is drawing the attention of all people residing in or around Mehsana.

People

First who come in mehsana are Prajapati(Kumbhar), and they setup Temple of Toranvani Mata, located in the middle of mehsana. Prajapati(Kumbhar) is considered to be the most trusted community in all over Gujarat.

The Jats in Mehsana have come from North India. Anjana Chaudhari are Jat of Gujarat. They are settled mainly in Mehsana district and surrounding areas. A few villages in Mehsana where Anjana Chaudhari live are Ucharpi, Tavadia, Khara, Mevad, Chitrodipura and the gotras found in them are Gujor, Radhiyala, Kag, Bera etc which are similar to Jat of North India. The Dudh Sagar Dairy is the creation of Anjana Chaudhari.

The following Clans are found in Mehsana. They are similar to the ones in Northern India. The way they are written in Gujarati are in the brackets.

There are many South Indian families staying here. There is a temple in the name of Shri Dharma sasta and a famous school "Sabari school" at Mehsana.

There is a "Osho Ashram" is situated at mehsana, which is bigest Osho ashram after Pune. Many people from different states and different countries came here for meditation.

Shri Sarvajanik Kelvani Mandal is the largest chain of schools in North Gujarat. Shri Vardhaman Vidyalaya is the only school in North Gujarat teaching the three mediums: English, Gujarati and Hindi.

There are many Christian Churches at Mehsana.All most all denominations are having their churches at Mehsana.

The St.Thomas Christians having their church "Mar Greegorious Orthodox Syrian Church at Mehsana. St. Thomas who was the disciple of Lord Jesus Christ came to India and established many churches in India. The Mehsana church is very famous for "Miracles" to the devotees.

Prajapati Vadi is one of the popular spot for celebrating the valuable occasions like Wedding, Get-together, etc.

Today Mehasana boast of the first General Aviation Airport in India. India's premier flying Academy Ahmedabad Aviation & Aeronautics Ltd.AAA as it is popularly called has established this facility with the kind help and cooperation of the Govt. of Gujarat.

This Airport was formaly inaugerated by Hon. Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat on 14th August 2007 at an impressive inaugaral Ceremony attended by more than 10,000 locals.
