Union Institute and University provides non-traditional education at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level. Begun as a consortium of universities in 1964 called The Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, it later became an independent degree-granting institution calling itself The University Without Walls (1971), and then The Union Institute (1989). After acquiring Vermont College in 2001, it was renamed Union Institute & University. With headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, Union Institute & University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
