Dog Protection
Unprotecting BBW
Line 623: Line 623:

Hello Voice of All - a week ago, I requested protection for the topic [[Dog]]. I requested three days (didn't want to be too greedy) but you have given (so far) seven. I didn't want to list it on the request for unprotection since I bleieve you'll unprotect it as a normal process. Just a reminder; if you disagree then let me know. --[[User:Supercoop|Supercoop]] 15:38, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Howdy. Could you revert your recent change to this redirect. We don't use american english in Australia and you've created a double redirect. I'd fix it but the redirect is currently protected. Garglebutt / (talk) 23:26, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Squidward

Hi. A number of pages Ihave either seen or worked on have been vandalized with a rediculous picture. The edit summaries all say "Squidward" on them. No one has really said anything. They have just reverted. However, I saw that Here you mentioned the squidward vandal. You are an admin. Why not just ban him. Since every single one of his edits has been exactly the same. It's probably not even a person. It might be some sort of program desgined to vandalize. Could you ban him. I have already reverted a page from him, and saw sevral other revert sevral more. thanks. Tobyk777 03:06, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By what user?Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 03:19, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He was an IP: 58.85.194.235
Is it one squidward vandal or many? I just looked and it seems that more pages have been vandalized in the exact same way than the ones on this guy's contributions list. Could he have multiple IPs? Or could there be some sort of squidward vandal group? Tobyk777 04:28, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Huge Sigh of Relief

Thank you for semi-protecting the page Jehovah's Witnesses: Controversial Issues. It can be difficult enough to reach a consensus on such an article without having to constantly monitor these anon IP's reverting activity. Maybe now we can continue to make progress towards a high quality NPOV article. Many, many thanks! Lucy 05:33, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Could you please point out which specific edits you found to be vandalism in semi-protecting the Jehovah's Witnesses: Controversial Issues page? Duffer1, a party in this content dispute who was blocked the other day for his bad conduct in it, was told on his discussion page by the blocking administrator, in agreement with another poster there, that "The edits were not vandalism, they were edits you did not agree with," and nothing has changed since then. From looking at the page Wikipedia:Semi-protection policy, it says that semi-protection isn't supposed to be used to deal with content disputes. It also says that it is "not intended to prohibit anonymous editing in general," which seems to have been a main motivation behind the semi-protection request. Thanks.Petronifico 06:35, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Repeatedly removing a dispute tag for no reason is vandalism. I can see several older editors, with accounts, reverting each other. There is not agreement yet and the page is disputed, whether I agree with the current version or not, it is disputed, so the tag stays. The IP's were disrupting the editing process by repeatedly removing tags without valid reasons or any agreement that would warrant their removal.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 06:42, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He was also told, however, that "I suggest you take a step back from articles related to your faith for a while, as your own point of view may be too coloured to see a neutral one." Is using dispute tags to avoid neutrality and NPOV a valid use of dispute tags? Doesn't that give everyone that doesn't get their way a coercive tool to use? For example, if someone disputes that the world is round, or that the Holocaust happened, does that legitimize slapping dispute tags on pages until they get their way?Petronifico 07:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If a good consensus of editors on the talk see nothing to dispute, then the tag should go. If this user is some sort of tagging troll or has and RfC or something, then I need to know, otherwise, it is just another disputed article.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 07:52, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, searching Google for "site:wikipedia.org duffer tag" shows that this user has a long history of slapping disputed tags all over Jehovah's Witness-related pages and then getting in fights with everyone when they don't see what his problem is, but I don't know how you define a tagging troll. When he was recently blocked, he provided a link to an arbitration case where the Arbitration Committee found him guilty of multiple counts of edit warring and point of view editing (here and here), among 25 total counts of bad behavior. But besides his history, if a bunch of members of the Flat Earth Society invaded some articles and decided that criticism of their beliefs was just biased bunk, would that form enough "consensus" to justify slapping dispute tags all over the place? Are these just weapons to edit war and insert POV if people don't get their way?Petronifico 08:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look into the Arbcoms. To answer the last concern, note that you are descript [[1]], which are not considered a concensus, such behavoir would be considered disruptive.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 19:55, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear

I'm not sure that the nomination was either necessary or even useful. I hope it will be possible to politely but firmly educate User:Primetime in the fact that they mergers are only saying to merge the verifiable stuff and that this explicitly excludes many of the unreferenced terms s/he refers to. AfD has often treated WP:V poorly, and I'm not really sure what to do about that. Sometimes when I write a closure statment, I make it critical of such things and intend to provide grounds for a future nomination. Somtimes, I editorially cut the article right back myself. People usually scream, but it demonstrates to people that it can be done, you know? I think WP:BOLD may be exactly what is needed. -Splashtalk 21:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah...nominating a subpage that was actively being used as a template/workshop to make a WP:V compatable list was very foolish imo, at least it seems. That possible made more trouble then before, and "pro-cruft trolls" may use the AfD to continue the "anti-censorship freedom of speech war". Sigh...I don't know where these people come from, but lets hope this doesn't become an issue. Merge or No conensus AfD's are subject to regular editing, so I'll keep an eye on that list, perhaps doing huge reverts if needed.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 21:52, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I recall, no. It would have filled up my whole screen if it had, I think, and I don't remember that happening. You know, it might have been the nature of the comment. It was backwards to the usual style people write in. -Splashtalk 23:30, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS. It's turning up in CAT:SEMI (on which I am cracking the whip at the moment) so I think you need to split your strings again. -Splashtalk 23:56, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. When I started there were about 90 members of that category. There are now about 23... I suggested to FoN that striking up a thread on WT:SEMI seems like a good idea. I don't want to start it myself since I haven't clarified my thoughts enough to have it appear above my signature yet, but I'd certainly pitch into the discussion. -Splashtalk 01:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Javascript's

I'm not sure how/where to add your admin scripts at. I get the new toolbox links but non of the tabs get listed.

Do you have a some sort of guide you could add for this? --Scott Grayban 08:56, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Look here, [2], since you are a non-admin, then get that one. Get the one with popups since those are nice (unless you run into problems). Go here and add it in. Seems that you re adding {{User:Voice of All/RC/nolupin/monobook.js}}, wich does not add popups. Try adding {{subst:User:Voice of All/RC/monobook.js}} The "subst:" means that it takes the current image (the way User:Voice of All/RC/monobook.js looks) and pasts it permanently in that form into your monobook. If I "subst" a page, its text will appear as its is now on the page I add the "susbt" to, and will stay that way. If I don't subst it, it will change everytime the page with the stuff I am copying changes. However, java will only read the js script if it is actually pasted there, so you need to use subst. I'll try to update my intructions, because I can tell that a few others made some mistakes as well with this.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 17:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh thanks!! I knew I was doing something wrong but just didn't know where -- cheers mate --Scott Grayban 17:10, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Protection of Hentai

I'm wondering why you placed Hentai under protection using the controversial version of the article. In addition, the images being used, although now sourced, may not be considered fair use. Karaveks voice seems to imply that a "majority rule" has already been reached, but if you were to see the talk page you'll notice there is no majority, in-fact there is only 4 people disputing this so far. I ask you to place a version of the page with no images as protected until the dispute is settled for the reasons I have stated. -- Ned Scott 22:15, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protection does not endorse the current version. I very much considered removing the image, but the reasons were not strong/obvious enough for me to lock it up a certain way, so I just locked it as it last was.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 22:51, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Front (World War II)

I know that it had been protected for 2 1/2 months, but unfortunately nothing is settled. Please put it on your watchlist if you haven't already, as I suspect the edit war will resume. It's not on my WL because I bowed out of it. Extremely frustrating situation. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 18:19, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I add that I agree completely; there is no agreement on a version. If anything the personal attacks on the discussion page have gotten worse than ever in the last few days. This was unfortunate since a new editor or two showed up only to be chased away. Others have dropped out from the exhaustion of trying to work with a single editor who defies any attempt to reach consensus. This leaves us in the unfortunate position of having a poor-quality article despite having many talented editors. The claim that the unprotected version had the support of the majority was incorrect. Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Help with Bernie Sanders article

There is an anon user jumping between IP addresses and reverting pages to instill his POV, most likely in violation of 3RR. I have tried to assume good faith, but the user seems to be intentionally making up IP addresses and signing with them on talk pages, including my own. I assume it is some manner of sockpuppetry. The last know IP is 64.223.121.83 (talk · contribs) --waffle iron 01:39, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He registered as Straightinfo (talk · contribs). Now he keeps removing my comments asking him to properly sign pages from Talk:Bernie Sanders. I left notes on his user talk to not remove other users comments and he calls that personal attacks and removes them. I say it's not an attack and include a warning template to not remove other users comments on his own talk and he removes that. --waffle iron 17:02, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you revert my edits on List of teetotalers? I changed it so that the list was the main article for the category of Teetoalers? You would think that under the category of Teetotalers - something that includes all teetotallers - the article which list them should be the main article.

My "main page" script is very simple, you can copy it to yours just to see. Hey,

I've installed your RC tool, but something's not quite right. When using the "quick warnings tabs", it gives "Regarding edits made during April 9 2006 (UTC)" as a headline instead of the current date. Any way to fix this?

Also, those tabs interfere with the normal edit buttons (the extra ones still seem to work, tough).

monobook.js

Apologies if this isn't the right place -- the right place is sometimes hard to find on Wikipedia!

As a Recent Changes Patroller, I use the anti-vandalism monobook.js script that points to your user-space. It's wonderful, and thank you very much for making it available! :)

However, the script seems to have stopped working about 30 minutes ago (e.g., about 0615 UTC on 19 April 2006). I'll mouse over a link, and I'll get the standard alt text, instead of that wonderful little preview window that I've come to rely on.

The anti-vandalism script doesn't seem to work on any page I visit. The script doesn't work for me on Firefox (my browser of choice) or MSIE (which I rarely use, but I opened it tonight just to test this). I did reboot (as a tech support person, that's the first thing I do ;) ), and the script still didn't work.

I don't know if any other folks are having difficulties.

I just wanted to let you know about this. If this is the wrong place to bring this up, please let me know and I'll post something in the proper location.

Thank you! :)

Please respond to my previous comments

I left you two messages before asking why you reverted my edits to the list of teetotalers and you still haven't responded. Please tell me why you reverted my edits. 141.211.4.33 23:43, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is this *[3] supposed to do? I reverted while on RC patrol as it seemed to be either a test edit or an out of format edit. If there is good reason for the *, then I'll put it back of course. Sorry for the wait, I've had much work and java from 30+ users to fix, so I left some messages without reply for a while.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 00:37, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. If you view the category of teetotalers it puts the article at the top of the category, showing that it is the main article It is mentioned in Wikipedia:Categorization#Category_sorting: "Using a space after the pipe is the customary way to categorize an article in a category with the same name, indicating that the article is the main topic article for that specific category." It seems a space is the customary way instead of a star so I have updated it. 141.211.4.23 01:11, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You replaced everything after the "|" with *, did you mean to just add the * after the | and before the rest?Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 01:14, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Sobran protection

Hey, thanks for stepping in when you did regarding protection given the reignition of the edit wars. If it's too soon, no problem, but it turns out that one of the warring groups were actually 3 meatpuppets of the same user. Given that the entire edit war revolved around 4 different people trying to keep a consensus version in place, and a user with 3 meatpuppets reverting wholesale, and that the meatpuppeteer (if that's a word) has been indefinitely blocked, is there a chance we could get the article unprotected now? Thanks in advance. --badlydrawnjeff (WP:MEMES?) 21:08, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can completely understand your frustration at people not removing or adding pages to the list (yeah, I'm guilty...sorry), but do you think the system itself is worthwhile that there's that much manual labor? I think this is another instance where MediaWiki software just kinda sucks for a given purpose. Oh yeah, and what are you doing up so late? Insomnia or something? -Mysekurity [m!] 06:58, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I made javascript that un/protects and lists/de-lists articles at the same time, I wish I could give it all admins with MediaWiki or something to keep things updated.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 17:59, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks! I have to integrate that all sometime soon (too many things to do, JS has to be integrated well...etc...), but I really appreciate it. I know that there are certain things that only show up in MediaWiki:Monobook.js and Common.js for admins. Y'might want to push this at Village Pump (technical) or at the Monobook.js talk page, because I'm sure this stuff would be really useful. I gotta tell you; my js is seriously rusty, so if you could help me out at all, I'd really appreciate it. My toolbox takes up about half the page, and the more advanced features [menus] of Lupin's popups have stopped working for me in IE (a while ago, in fact). In any event, thanks again, and I'll talk t' ya soon. -Mysekurity [m!] 21:18, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
For some reason, after you went into my monbook.js, it stopped working for me, and all my custom toolbox links disappeared. I hadn't seen that you went in there, but I moved the category to my User page, so as not to disrupt anything. I reverted to an older version of my monobook, and now things work pretty well, but I have no idea what went wrong (if you check the link, it seems there's something wrong with the subst:ing). Anyway, I appreciate the thought, but I guess I'll just be old-fashioned when I update protected pages, and let y'all handle the fancy javascript. I just thought you'd like to know, in case anything's wrong (sorry that my js skills...uh...don't exist). See ya! -Mysekurity [m!] 14:46, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Eesh! I don't even want to go into what happened last time I listened to a "wise bearded man"... Anyway, I can completely understand you on the "trying to trim each and every 'unnecessary' thing" off the code and winding up with something that works less than intended. I guess I should try protection on the Sandbox or other space now, as I agree with you that userspace pages shouldn't be added to the log. While my monbook is pretty much back to what it was before (the toolbar links and popups work again), I think it was the nested nowiki tags that broke the script, rather than anything you did (my fault, not yours). However, I don't see any spiffy p=0 buttons or anything, and I'm kinda sad :'(. If y'could help me out, I'd be more than happy to send over my suite of TI-83+ tools, all written in TI-BASIC, which I hope you will find useful. -Mysekurity [m!] 22:24, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Double eesh! Thanks for trying, I think I'll live in Solitude just updating Protected pages. I think it's more of a thing I have to remember than something I need a tool for (not that much of a pain in the ass to do, just remember). Thanks for commenting on the newmessagehistory() thing, I'd removed it a while ago as it wasn't working, but I didn't do such a great surgery. One of these days I'll fix this spaghetti code. I'll write down what I want in the monbook, and then I'll work on the rest, and I'll ask ya if anything comes up. Thanks again. -Mysekurity [m!] 04:16, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll try to get a more in-depth look sometime this week. Right now, homework. -Mysekurity [m!] 04:27, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello, mate. Could you change the template link on your page from {{signpost}} to {{User Signpost}}? I recently asked for semi-protection of the Houston article on the grounds that information is repeatedly removed concerning her well-publicized drug allegations. You claimed that the article didn't warrant enough recent reverts to give it protection. The article gets vandalized— in the form of blankings— at least three-five times a day, and it continuously has to be reverted back. The vandals come in the form of anonymous IP addresses, whose only contributions revolve around protecting the reputation of Houston. Despite warnings on the talk-page and even the article itself, the "negative" information about Houston is repeatedly removed several times a day. It is becoming extremely annoying, and these fans of hers need to cease their unnecessary vandalizing. If you could offer any administrative help to resolve this problem, it would be greatly appreciated by those who check the article on an hourly basis to revert vandalism. —(Notorious4life 05:07, 25 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Your comment on the Franjo Tudjman page

Hello!

Thank you for your comment.

1. I have a question: was your comment a response to the RfC I sent?

2. Your comment appears to be based on an earlier version of the page. "Even more atrocious than they actually had been" and "these numbers are widely considered to be inaccurate" aren't present in the present version. Nevertheless, it's very helpful of you to indicate that they shouldn't be restored.

3. Could you please comment on the actual subject of the edit war (1. whether the existence of certain quotes of disputed authenticity deserves to be mentioned and 2. whether a certain fact deserves to be included in the introductory part) and how this conflict might be solved?

--85.187.44.131 14:51, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "these numbers are widely considered to be inaccurate" may still get reverted in, perhaps the other one. I just wanted to be clear that statements like that are not exeptable. There is a long, light, edit conflict. The it is not enough to really call it an edit war just yet imo.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 16:16, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, OK. I wonder how you tell the difference between an edit war and a light edit conflict, though. This conflict involves the constant alternation between two versions of the page, so I've been forced to incorporate each of my edits in both versions to make sure they don't get lost in the next revert in a couple of hours. For me, this is as bad as it gets. --85.187.44.131 17:35, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to fix

The reason this may not be working for some people is because you use the function "tnaddlilink()" instead of just plain "addlilink()" to add the statistics tab at the top. You need to make sure that people include that function in their monobook.js along with the link to your script. You can get it from Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/test-enhanced, I don't know if anywhere else has it.

It was move protected earlier, in addition to being semiprotected, so I assumed that the admin has a reason. Also, his protection summary was:
  • 01:02, April 28, 2006 Jedi6 protected Wii (Blocking move abilities to stop the back and forth of page moves [edit=autoconfirmed:move=sysop])
If you disagree with that reason, then talk to the admin himself. I'll unprotect myself if needed, but it would be better if you talked to User:Jedi6. Thanks.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 21:39, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal fighter

I was just wondering about your "admin-like tools" javascript code; it works wonders, but somehow it cuts off my popups; now, if I use the popups, the window will pop up. However, the millisecond my mouse enters the small gap between the first and second windows, the second dropdown window vanishes. It isn't a huge problem, but I was just wondering if you had a solution. Thanks! _-M o P-_ 22:09, 1 May 2006 (UTC) [reply]

Heh...I turned of double popups just because it was annoying, but I never experienced that problem. Then again, I use popupsdev and not regular popups.
// User:Lupin/popupsdev.js - please include this line
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'

Left Party (Sweden)

I've unprotected this, cos I've blocked Soman for 3RR, and it looked to me like it was a rather one-sided matter. If you disagree, feel free to re-protect it. Probably best continued at Talk:Left Party (Sweden) William M. Connolley 20:54, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh great. I've reviewed it; I was wrong; I've re-protected William M. Connolley 21:47, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1. The protection was asked by me with the aim of defending the article of the continous erasures (starting with November 2005) by User:Soman. However, owing to some unfortunate cicumstances, the very version promoted by Soman and put into effect with five reverts within lesss than 24 h has now been protected. Comments and help on the issue are more than welcome, anyway.
2. I deny User:Advocatus diaboli being my sock puppet, although we are acquainted. More detailed check would prove that different computers are used by Constanz and the newly registered user. Thus, I do not agree with re-establishing version by the blocked user and then protecting it. Even if I, User:Constanz, had made my fourth and fifth revert (just like Soman did) instead of Advocatus Diaboli, the version protected should have been the last one. I do not see any reason for an admin to revert to the previous previous version before protecting.--Constanz - Talk 05:33, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As we all know, admins should avoid favoring one version of the article over another, unless one version is vandalism. The case concerned, however, does not involve vandalism and the sock puppet claim is unproved; also, this does not justify version changes by admins.--Constanz - Talk 05:45, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sabbath unprotection

I think you might have misunderstood what the request was for. It was under the "requests for unprotection" header. I talked to Essjay about it and he said he would prefer that another admin unprotect it given he was the one to protect it. Hence the reason it was in the list for unprotection. Not mad about Cyde

I find his actions to be unilateral...this has been a persistent problem of his. When others complain about his actions, he acts as if they have the problem. If we started blocking everyone that internally spams, we would be pretty busy. He voted on that Afd and I think there should be a policy against anyone voting and closing an Afd, no matter how one sided the votes are.--MONGO 07:12, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was on Wikien-L several months ago - I can't remember when. But he continued to call her a POV pusher and a vandal on her talk page last night. Templates

Hi Voice, the templates aren't policy. They are just ordinary templates that go on policy and guideline pages. And the change I want to make isn't a major change. (All I want to do is remove the "feel free" and "be bold" advice, because newbies take it literally and try to change policy.) CBD did express his view about this several days ago. When I saw he had protected, I didn't undo it or report it, I just asked him to undo it and allow a completely uninvolved admin to decide whether protection was needed. I agree that we should use common sense as well as the policies to guide us. But when an experienced admin says "I think you may have inadvertently violated policy; please undo your admin action," we should also use common sense there, and take that request very seriously. This whole problem stems from Locke Cole's having taken ownership of these templates. He simply refuses to allow anyone to make an edit he disagrees with and he revert wars to retain his preference. The arbcom is currently dealing with his tendency to revert war, and there's an article RfC about the templates, so it'll get sorted out soon one way or the other. SlimVirgin (talk) 01:13, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Those tags are pretty important, and it is very important to discuss policy page edits first (bad things always happen when people don't), so I agree that a)Adding "be bold" is a very bad idea for policy pages and b)CBD should have just let another admin protect to avoid any issues. Nevertheless, I don't see a definitive case against him. Since the tags are not policy pages, considering that, makes me less bother by it not getting reverted to the status quo. CBD created more dispute by refusing to be gracious enough to just unprotect and let another admin decide. I don't think that was the end of the world, on the other hand, it would have been very easy for him to just unprotect. At any rate, this topic has gone on too long...I thinks its best left in the archives. I'll take note if he does anything similar, but likely this disscussion's existance is not constructive. The original language in use for almost a year has included "feel free" (with a link to WP:BB). The change SlimVirgin is proposing would remove that and basically require consensus before any changes are made. —Locke Coletc 01:34, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken ownership of nothing. Stop spreading your flat out blatant lies and assume good faith once in awhile. You are the one who chose to revert war over this instead of discussing it. You are the one who attempted to push through your changes with little or no discussion. You are the one assuming bad faith in everyone else, even admins who have been noted for their neutrality in disputes.
I strongly urge you to consider reading WP:CIV and WP:AGF. You are in desperate need of both. —Locke Coletc 01:34, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh. I came by to thank you for trying to defuse this nonsense, but seeing the above.... oi! For the record, on my 'refusing to be gracious enough to let another admin decide'... please see me asking another admin to decide. I did not unprotect myself because I don't think that is an appropriate response to bullying and harrassment by one of the original policy violators. Instead I handed it over to someone else... so please, less with the false statements / insults? It's really starting to get a tad annoying. As to letting another admin do the initial protection... it simply never occurred to me that someone would claim that my previous comment indicated a bias or that completely unrelated edits two weeks ago constituted involvement. Frankly, both claims seem absurd to me (since I know I didn't have a 'side' in the debate), but had I anticipated the assumption of bad faith I would have let someone else handle it... as I did once the issue was raised. So... go ahead and 'take note' of my future actions. I've 'noted' incivility, numerous false accusations, 3RR violation, edit warring, unprotection of pages the person is clearly involved in, et cetera. All leading to this first encounter creating a rather poor impression. --CBDunkerson 02:24, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I said "gracious", I was not saying that you are not gracious, but that as a nitpick, you could have just let another admin do it, not because you were seriously involved in the edit war, but just because it might look that way, and it would be slighter better if an admin who did not comment on it didn't protect. That is what I was trying to get at. Do not think that I have not noted the behavoir of others and failures to assume good faith...I've noted it all. As I said, "it is not the end of the world", I don't really think that such a big deal should have made over the protection.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 02:33, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had agreed not to comment any more, but for the record, there have been no 3RR violations and no violations of any other policy, and this bad mouthing has to stop. Other people have weighed in with their views and the content dispute is now settled, which means the entire issue is over, unless either Locke Cole or CBDunkerson wish to keep it going. SlimVirgin (talk) 06:27, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I fully and completely agree with the view of CBD. And I'm very astonished by the behaviour of SlimVirgin, which did by herself revert war on other locations, too. If this should get it's way to ArbCom, I can provide evidence. I strongly propose to SlimVirgin to finally stop with these false accusations. This is getting very annoying. CBD was full well in protecting the template. You clearly were in a revert war with Locke. I would expect a different behaviour from someone with your profile. --Ligulem 21:30, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've responded elsewhere to CBD, but just to make clear here that I apologize for my role in this, and did not intend to imply that he was acting in bad faith. It was a simple disagreement about policy interpretation magnified by frustration, which I take responsibility for. Again, my apologies. SlimVirgin (talk) 05:29, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History javascript

Deleting

Hi VofA, I'm sorry to bother you with another query, but I'd like to use your script for restoring edits after deletions. I have one of 1800 edits to do, and someone told me about your thing. I just installed it, or I believe I did, but I lost my block and block log tabs, as well as the new protection tabs (which are brilliant, by the way). Is this a known incompatibility, or did I do something wrong, do you think? SlimVirgin (talk) 20:06, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for installing that for me. It's wonderful, it really is. What with that and the protection script, all these chores are now so much easier. I was faced today with manually restoring 1,800 edits, and had done 600 when Ann told me there was a faster way. And protecting a page is now almost a pleasure, so much so that I'll have to watch not to do it too often. :-) Seriously, these are really helpful scripts. Thank you. Stats on RFA

Hi. Would you mind telling me how you generate the edit counts stats that you post on RFAs? Thanks! --kingboyk 15:45, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to my monobook

Voice of All,

Hello, how are you? First of all, thanks for creating useful tools for other users. I have greatly enjoyed your history tool. Secondly, I certainly don't mind you (or anyone) editing my monobook if you see problems with the code or various other things. However, I was somewhat confused by your edit to my monobook: [6] Was this some kind of technical error when trying to change something automatically rather than manually? Since you know much more about these things than I do, please take a second to correct this and make whatever change you were trying to make in the first place. Thanks for your time! EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 19:06, 6 May 2006 (UTC) P.S.- Looking through your contribs, this error seems to have occurred on many ocassions when you were editing others' monobooks. Perhaps there is some kind of bug in whatever replace-text script you are using. EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 19:10, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WOA!! I updated my replace script by making it like another users already out there, but sheesh, If I can't fix that bug I'll have to go back to the slow version. It seemed to be working OK before, maybe special characters threw it off. Nevertheless, the non-admins should not be in the admin cat, anyone is welcome to fix that. Thanks for pointing this out.Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 19:22, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I've personally changed mine: [7] (though hopefully I can change it back sometime in the future). EWS23 | (Leave me a message!) 19:45, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Heh...there are reasons why I keep these categories ....:)Voice-of-AllT|@|ESP 00:09, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks and a question

first off, thanks for getting rid of lupin's pop-ups from my monobook.js; i was debating whether or not i should leave that there and figured i would and then see what happened . . . secondly, a question. after adding a bunch of your scripts, the shortcuts at the top right changed- eg, it now says "my talk page" rather than "my talk," "change preferences" rather than "preferences". It's not that big a deal, but it's a bit more cumbersome than it was before; i guess i just prefer the more streamlined look up there. which bit of code changed this? and is there some way to change it back? i know absolutely nothing about programming except the most rudimentary html and wiki-markup, so i have no idea how to figure this out for myself . . . But i'm curious as to which bit of code changed this and whether or not i can change it back. thanks again --heah 00:02, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:PP automation

I Would love to have some js tools that would make it easier to PP pages and list them in the appropriate lists. Thanks. ≈ jossi ≈ t@ 02:03, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Bot

If your new bot is going to run automatically at all, please be sure to list it on Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approvals. Listing there is important to ensure that noone blocks you for running an unauthorized bot, and can be sued to get a bot flag. Generally they approve a trial run first, then bot status in a week ortwo, and a flag, if desired after another week or so. — xaosflux Talk 15:08, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note, I put my vote of support in for your bot at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approvals. — xaosflux Talk 04:19, 10 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: WP:PP

Hey VoA, long time-no talk. Anyways, I'd assume Splash is busy working on his doctorate, so I can't blame him for being gone. I'm a little bogged down as well, but I'll see what I can do. Maybe I'll even learn something about RFPP...:) See ya 'round. -Mysekurity [m!] 21:20, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Dog Protection

Hello Voice of All - a week ago, I requested protection for the topic Dog. I requested three days (didn't want to be too greedy) but you have given (so far) seven. I didn't want to list it on the request for unprotection since I bleieve you'll unprotect it as a normal process. Just a reminder; if you disagree then let me know. --Supercoop 15:38, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotecting BBW

FYI, the spamming resumed less then 20 minutes after you removed the protection. We'll see how it goes, but I'll reprotect if it keeps up. --Kbh3rdtalk 17:55, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
