Squidward

Hi. A number of pages Ihave either seen or worked on have been vandalized with a rediculous picture. The edit summaries all say "Squidward" on them. No one has really said anything. They have just reverted. However, I saw that Here you mentioned the squidward vandal. You are an admin. Why not just ban him. Since every single one of his edits has been exactly the same. It's probably not even a person. It might be some sort of program desgined to vandalize. Could you ban him. I have already reverted a page from him, and saw sevral other revert sevral more. thanks. It can be difficult enough to reach a consensus on such an article without having to constantly monitor these anon IP's reverting activity. Request

Could you please point out which specific edits you found to be vandalism in semi-protecting the Jehovah's Witnesses: Controversial Issues page? Duffer1, a party in this content dispute who was blocked the other day for his bad conduct in it, was told on his discussion page by the blocking administrator, in agreement with another poster there, that "The edits were not vandalism, they were edits you did not agree with," and nothing has changed since then. From looking at the page Wikipedia:Semi-protection policy, it says that semi-protection isn't supposed to be used to deal with content disputes. It also says that it is "not intended to prohibit anonymous editing in general," which seems to have been a main motivation behind the semi-protection request. Repeatedly removing a dispute tag for no reason is vandalism. I can see several older editors, with accounts, reverting each other. There is not agreement yet and the page is disputed, whether I agree with the current version or not, it is disputed, so the tag stays. The IP's were disrupting the editing process by repeatedly removing tags without valid reasons or any agreement that would warrant their removal.Voice-of-All^T|@|ESP 06:42, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

He was also told, however, that "I suggest you take a step back from articles related to your faith for a while, as your own point of view may be too coloured to see a neutral one." Is using dispute tags to avoid neutrality and NPOV a valid use of dispute tags? Doesn't that give everyone that doesn't get their way a coercive tool to use? For example, if someone disputes that the world is round, or that the Holocaust happened, does that legitimize slapping dispute tags on pages until they get their way?Petronifico 07:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

If a good consensus of editors on the talk see nothing to dispute, then the tag should go. If this user is some sort of tagging troll or has and RfC or something, then I need to know, otherwise, it is just another disputed article.Voice-of-All^T|@|ESP 07:52, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, searching Google for "site:wikipedia.org duffer tag" shows that this user has a long history of slapping disputed tags all over Jehovah's Witness-related pages and then getting in fights with everyone when they don't see what his problem is, but I don't know how you define a tagging troll. When he was recently blocked, he provided a link to an arbitration case where the Arbitration Committee found him guilty of multiple counts of edit warring and point of view editing (here and here), among 25 total counts of bad behavior. But besides his history, if a bunch of members of the Flat Earth Society invaded some articles and decided that criticism of their beliefs was just biased bunk, would that form enough "consensus" to justify slapping dispute tags all over the place? Are these just weapons to edit war and insert POV if people don't get their way?Petronifico 08:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Oh dear

I'm not sure that the nomination was either necessary or even useful. I hope it will be possible to politely but firmly educate User:Primetime in the fact that they mergers are only saying to merge the verifiable stuff and that this explicitly excludes many of the unreferenced terms s/he refers to. AfD has often treated WP:V poorly, and I'm not really sure what to do about that. Sometimes when I write a closure statment, I make it critical of such things and intend to provide grounds for a future nomination. Somtimes, I editorially cut the article right back myself. People usually scream, but it demonstrates to people that it can be done, you know? I think WP:BOLD may be exactly what is needed. -Splash^talk 21:31, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah...nominating a subpage that was actively being used as a template/workshop to make a WP:V compatable list was very foolish imo, at least it seems. That possible made more trouble then before, and "pro-cruft trolls" may use the AfD to continue the "anti-censorship freedom of speech war". Sigh...I don't know where these people come from, but lets hope this doesn't become an issue. Look here, [2], since you are a non-admin, then get that one. Get the one with popups since those are nice (unless you run into problems). Go here and add it in. Seems that you re adding {{User:Voice of All/RC/nolupin/monobook.js}}, wich does not add popups. Try adding {{subst:User:Voice of All/RC/monobook.js}} The "subst:" means that it takes the current image (the way User:Voice of All/RC/monobook.js looks) and pasts it permanently in that form into your monobook. If I "subst" a page, its text will appear as its is now on the page I add the "susbt" to, and will stay that way. If I don't subst it, it will change everytime the page with the stuff I am copying changes. However, java will only read the js script if it is actually pasted there, so you need to use subst. I'll try to update my intructions, because I can tell that a few others made some mistakes as well with this.Voice-of-All^T|@|ESP 17:31, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Reach out Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience: "No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention." Stress Alerts The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them. Note from the editor Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!

The last AC meeting (full log) Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on. Protection of Hentai

I'm wondering why you placed Hentai under protection using the controversial version of the article. In addition, the images being used, although now sourced, may not be considered fair use. Karaveks voice seems to imply that a "majority rule" has already been reached, but if you were to see the talk page you'll notice there is no majority, in-fact there is only 4 people disputing this so far. I ask you to place a version of the page with no images as protected until the dispute is settled for the reasons I have stated. -- Ned Scott 22:15, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

May I add that I agree completely; there is no agreement on a version. If anything the personal attacks on the discussion page have gotten worse than ever in the last few days. This was unfortunate since a new editor or two showed up only to be chased away. Others have dropped out from the exhaustion of trying to work with a single editor who defies any attempt to reach consensus. This leaves us in the unfortunate position of having a poor-quality article despite having many talented editors. The claim that the unprotected version had the support of the majority was incorrect. So why is it that I had to apply for "israel" to be unprotected, instead of just unprotecting it myself?

Help with Bernie Sanders article

There is an anon user jumping between IP addresses and reverting pages to instill his POV, most likely in violation of 3RR. I have tried to assume good faith, but the user seems to be intentionally making up IP addresses and signing with them on talk pages, including my own. I assume it is some manner of sockpuppetry. He registered as Straightinfo (talk · contribs). Now he keeps removing my comments asking him to properly sign pages from Talk:Bernie Sanders. I left notes on his user talk to not remove other users comments and he calls that personal attacks and removes them. List of teetotalers

Why did you revert my edits on List of teetotalers? I changed it so that the list was the main article for the category of Teetoalers? You would think that under the category of Teetotalers - something that includes all teetotallers - the article which list them should be the main article.

Monobook.js

Hi, sorry to bother you but... In my monobook.js I have recently added your script where it changes the main page article tab to main page. Unfourtunatley something bad seems to have happened. Although one of my other java scripts functions correctly (I can't test the other) yours doesn't and the page itself looks screwed up (not how it should do). He was talking about his. The problem lies with the other script he had in there (outdated godmode.js and google seach, which gives "missing } after XML" errors in JS console. My "main page" script is very simple, you can copy it to yours just to see. Sometimes you see the tab change from article to main page, however that would not happen if it was on the MediaWiki js (it loads first methinks).Voice-of-All^T|@|ESP 21:01, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Admin-like RC patrol tools

Hey,

I've installed your RC tool, but something's not quite right. When using the "quick warnings tabs", it gives "Regarding edits made during April 9 2006 (UTC)" as a headline instead of the current date. Any way to fix this?

Also, those tabs interfere with the normal edit buttons (the extra ones still seem to work, tough).

monobook.js

Apologies if this isn't the right place -- the right place is sometimes hard to find on Wikipedia!

As a Recent Changes Patroller, I use the anti-vandalism monobook.js script that points to your user-space. It's wonderful, and thank you very much for making it available! :)

However, the script seems to have stopped working about 30 minutes ago (e.g., about 0615 UTC on 19 April 2006). I'll mouse over a link, and I'll get the standard alt text, instead of that wonderful little preview window that I've come to rely on.

The anti-vandalism script doesn't seem to work on any page I visit. The script doesn't work for me on Firefox (my browser of choice) or MSIE (which I rarely use, but I opened it tonight just to test this). I did reboot (as a tech support person, that's the first thing I do ;) ), and the script still didn't work.

I don't know if any other folks are having difficulties.

I just wanted to let you know about this. If this is the wrong place to bring this up, please let me know and I'll post something in the proper location.

If you view the category of teetotalers it puts the article at the top of the category, showing that it is the main article It is mentioned in Wikipedia:Categorization#Category_sorting: "Using a space after the pipe is the customary way to categorize an article in a category with the same name, indicating that the article is the main topic article for that specific category." Joseph Sobran protection

Hey, thanks for stepping in when you did regarding protection given the reignition of the edit wars. If it's too soon, no problem, but it turns out that one of the warring groups were actually 3 meatpuppets of the same user. Given that the entire edit war revolved around 4 different people trying to keep a consensus version in place, and a user with 3 meatpuppets reverting wholesale, and that the meatpuppeteer (if that's a word) has been indefinitely blocked, is there a chance we could get the article unprotected now? Whitney Houston

I recently asked for semi-protection of the Houston article on the grounds that information is repeatedly removed concerning her well-publicized drug allegations. You claimed that the article didn't warrant enough recent reverts to give it protection. The article gets vandalized— in the form of blankings— at least three-five times a day, and it continuously has to be reverted back. The vandals come in the form of anonymous IP addresses, whose only contributions revolve around protecting the reputation of Houston. Despite warnings on the talk-page and even the article itself, the "negative" information about Houston is repeatedly removed several times a day. It is becoming extremely annoying, and these fans of hers need to cease their unnecessary vandalizing. How to fix

The reason this may not be working for some people is because you use the function "tnaddlilink()" instead of just plain "addlilink()" to add the statistics tab at the top. You need to make sure that people include that function in their monobook.js along with the link to your script. You can get it from Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/test-enhanced, I don't know if anywhere else has it.

Vandal fighter

I was just wondering about your "admin-like tools" javascript code; it works wonders, but somehow it cuts off my popups; now, if I use the popups, the window will pop up. However, the millisecond my mouse enters the small gap between the first and second windows, the second dropdown window vanishes. Heh...I turned of double popups just because it was annoying, but I never experienced that problem. Then again, I use popupsdev and not regular popups.

2. I deny User:Advocatus diaboli being my sock puppet, although we are acquainted. More detailed check would prove that different computers are used by Constanz and the newly registered user. Thus, I do not agree with re-establishing version by the blocked user and then protecting it. Even if I, User:Constanz, had made my fourth and fifth revert (just like Soman did) instead of Advocatus Diaboli, the version protected should have been the last one. I find his actions to be unilateral...this has been a persistent problem of his. When others complain about his actions, he acts as if they have the problem. If we started blocking everyone that internally spams, we would be pretty busy. Templates

Hi Voice, the templates aren't policy. They are just ordinary templates that go on policy and guideline pages. And the change I want to make isn't a major change. (All I want to do is remove the "feel free" and "be bold" advice, because newbies take it literally and try to change policy.) CBD did express his view about this several days ago. When I saw he had protected, I didn't undo it or report it, I just asked him to undo it and allow a completely uninvolved admin to decide whether protection was needed. I agree that we should use common sense as well as the policies to guide us. But when an experienced admin says "I think you may have inadvertently violated policy; please undo your admin action," we should also use common sense there, and take that request very seriously. This whole problem stems from Locke Cole's having taken ownership of these templates. He simply refuses to allow anyone to make an edit he disagrees with and he revert wars to retain his preference. The arbcom is currently dealing with his tendency to revert war, and there's an article RfC about the templates, so it'll get sorted out soon one way or the other. Those tags are pretty important, and it is very important to discuss policy page edits first (bad things always happen when people don't), so I agree that a)Adding "be bold" is a very bad idea for policy pages and b)CBD should have just let another admin protect to avoid any issues. Nevertheless, I don't see a definitive case against him. Since the tags are not policy pages, considering that, makes me less bother by it not getting reverted to the status quo. CBD created more dispute by refusing to be gracious enough to just unprotect and let another admin decide. I don't think that was the end of the world, on the other hand, it would have been very easy for him to just unprotect. At any rate, this topic has gone on too long...I thinks its best left in the archives. I'll take note if he does anything similar, but likely this disscussion's existance is not constructive. Frankly, both claims seem absurd to me (since I know I didn't have a 'side' in the debate), but had I anticipated the assumption of bad faith I would have let someone else handle it... as I did once the issue was raised. So... go ahead and 'take note' of my future actions. I've 'noted' incivility, numerous false accusations, 3RR violation, edit warring, unprotection of pages the person is clearly involved in, et cetera. When I said "gracious", I was not saying that you are not gracious, but that as a nitpick, you could have just let another admin do it, not because you were seriously involved in the edit war, but just because it might look that way, and it would be slighter better if an admin who did not comment on it didn't protect. That is what I was trying to get at. Do not think that I have not noted the behavoir of others and failures to assume good faith...I've noted it all. I had agreed not to comment any more, but for the record, there have been no 3RR violations and no violations of any other policy, and this bad mouthing has to stop. Other people have weighed in with their views and the content dispute is now settled, which means the entire issue is over, unless either Locke Cole or CBDunkerson wish to keep it going. I fully and completely agree with the view of CBD. And I'm very astonished by the behaviour of SlimVirgin, which did by herself revert war on other locations, too. If this should get it's way to ArbCom, I can provide evidence. I strongly propose to SlimVirgin to finally stop with these false accusations. This is getting very annoying. Deleting

Hi VofA, I'm sorry to bother you with another query, but I'd like to use your script for restoring edits after deletions. I have one of 1800 edits to do, and someone told me about your thing. I just installed it, or I believe I did, but I lost my block and block log tabs, as well as the new protection tabs (which are brilliant, by the way). Thanks for installing that for me. It's wonderful, it really is. What with that and the protection script, all these chores are now so much easier. I was faced today with manually restoring 1,800 edits, and had done 600 when Ann told me there was a faster way. And protecting a page is now almost a pleasure, so much so that I'll have to watch not to do it too often. :-) Seriously, these are really helpful scripts. Thank you. Secondly, I certainly don't mind you (or anyone) editing my monobook if you see problems with the code or various other things. WOA!! I updated my replace script by making it like another users already out there, but sheesh, If I can't fix that bug I'll have to go back to the slow version. It seemed to be working OK before, maybe special characters threw it off. Nevertheless, the non-admins should not be in the admin cat, anyone is welcome to fix that. thanks and a question

first off, thanks for getting rid of lupin's pop-ups from my monobook.js; i was debating whether or not i should leave that there and figured i would and then see what happened . . . secondly, a question. after adding a bunch of your scripts, the shortcuts at the top right changed- eg, it now says "my talk page" rather than "my talk," "change preferences" rather than "preferences". It's not that big a deal, but it's a bit more cumbersome than it was before; i guess i just prefer the more streamlined look up there. which bit of code changed this? and is there some way to change it back? i know absolutely nothing about programming except the most rudimentary html and wiki-markup, so i have no idea how to figure this out for myself . . . But i'm curious as to which bit of code changed this and whether or not i can change it back. thanks again --heah 00:02, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. Stressbusters The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome! If your new bot is going to run automatically at all, please be sure to list it on Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approvals. Listing there is important to ensure that noone blocks you for running an unauthorized bot, and can be sued to get a bot flag.
