In Season 1, Bradin, along with his brother, Derrick, and his sister, Nikki, loses his parents to a flood in Kansas. When he and the rest of the Westerly kids move out to Playa Linda, California, he goes through a lot of troubles. He comes home drunk and beats up one of Ava's roommates, Jay Robertson, played by [[Ryan Kwanten]] because Bradin saw Jay kissing his surf teacher, Erika Spalding, played by [[Taylor Cole]] on the date Bradin and Erika had planned.

In Season 2, once Sara is sent to boarding school, he meets a girl named Callie, played by Danielle Savre, who he finds out is from Nebraska. He has sex with her after his aunt's rehearsal dinner, and enjoys it. He becomes so obsessed, it causes Callie to consider breaking up with him. Before she can consider, they have sex again. This time, Ava walks in on them, causing Callie to explode and break up with him for real. After Callie leaves him, he tries out for the surf team. He struggles and consider taking steroids. He overdoses on the drug, causing him to fall down the stairs. He goes to the emergency room after being banged up. Then, he goes on a surf tour with Jay. While he is there, he is signed to WaveCrasher Boards, and meets a "friend" named Brice. Brice's sister, Faith, comes to town, searching for colleges. She consults Bradin about college and changing his life for the better, using Brice as an example.

Bradin Westerly is the name of the character, which Jesse McCartney played on The WB's short-lived show, Summerland. On the show, which is now being broadcast on The N.
