Megastraea undosa, common name the wavy turban snail, is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Turbinidae, the turban snails. [2] This species is native to the coast of California.[3]
Distribution
This species occurs in the eastern Pacific Ocean from California, USA to Central Baja California, Mexico.
Description
The size of the shell of this species varies between 40 mm and 145 mm. The white, imperforate shell has a turbinate-conical shape with a thick, pearly lining. The wavy, horny periphery is overhanging with fine laminae. It is shapes over a series of nodules that form a twisted ridge at the outer edge of each whorl. Each whorl shows regular rows of fine knobs and fold. The periostracum is dark brown. The concave base has three small, spiral cords.The arcuated columella has a pearly groove. The operculum shows on its outside three ridges. [4] [5]
Habitat
This large snail inhabits rocky shores in shallow waters, generally protected areas below the low tide level.
