Northsound 1 is a commercial local radio station serving Aberdeen and the north east of Scotland. It is part of the Big City Network.

History

It launched at 6am on 27 July 1981. The first presenter on air was Bobby Hain, and the first record played was "We've Only Just Begun" by the Carpenters. Nicky Campbell is probably the best-known broadcaster to have started his career at Northsound, which he joined after graduating from the University of Aberdeen.

In 1995 the station split its services to become Northsound 1 on 96.9FM, and Northsound 2 on 1035MW. Both stations now also broadcast on DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting – i.e. Digital Radio).

Current presenters on Northsound 1 include Greig Easton, John Mellis, John Milne and Andy James, Craig McDonald, Fiona Hardie, Neil Weightman, Jenny Laing, Michael Gordon, Craig Milne, and Chris Thomson

Northsound 1's main 96.9 FM transmitter is located at Durris, near Stonehaven. It also broadcasts on 97.6 FM from the Balgownie transmitter covering north Aberdeen, and on 103.0 FM from Stirling Hill covering the Peterhead area.
