The town is the site of a border crossing with [[Republic of Azerbaijan]]. Name of this city in older times was pronounced Pileh-Savar which means "Great Rider" in [[Old Turkish language]], the Iranian language of the area, before Turkic entered this region. The town is the site of a border crossing with Republic of Azerbaijan. Pile-Savar was built by a dignitary of the Buyid dynasty who was called Pile-Savar (the Great Rider).[3]

Road 33 connects it to Ardabil.
