Michiel Smit

Michiel Smit (Maasland, Netherlands, 21 August 1976) is a Dutch politician and leader of Nieuw Rechts, an conservative political party.

Michiel Smit was elected to the Rotterdam city council in 2002 as a member of Leefbaar Rotterdam. In the Dutch national elections of January 2003 Smit held the number two spot on the conservatieven.nl list. In February 2003, he came into conflict with Leefbaar-Rotterdam leader Ronald Sörensen and decided to leave the party. After leaving, he founded a new party: Nieuw Rechts.

He released his first book "Nederland op z'n kop" in june 2004, just before the european elections. In the book the outlines his views on Dutch society. Also he describes the threat of Muslim extremists in the Netherlands. Dutch media said [citation needed] that Smit was right after the murder on Theo van Gogh.

The current book release "Veiligheid, doe het ZELF" covers the legalisation of handweapons in the Netherlands which, according to Michiel Smit, leads to less violence.

On the Nieuw Rechts website Michiel is posting his political thoughts and opens a discussion about the current political situation. Smit also writes in a personal weblog. With the 10-point's plan he shows the people in The Netherlands his thoughts and his ideas on nationalism.

Although his party holds no seats in parliament and, according to the latest polls, has no hope of changing this at the next elections of the 22nd of november, Smit remains a highly controversial political figure in the Netherlands. He has made statements against immigration and Islam, as some journalists have said[citation needed] that he has associated with the white nationalist organisation Stormfront.

Former Leefbaar Nederland lijsttrekker Haitske van de Linde called Michiel Smit "about the greatest neo-nazi of Dutch politics" in the television program BvD in 2002. Although first fined for making this statement by a court, Haitske van de Linde fought this case through on appeal, and was cleared from wrong-doing by a court in 2005, since "Smit owed it to himself to be qualified like this."

In February 2006 Dutch media reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has offered bounty of $200,000 on Michiel Smit. [1]
