Surname/Family Name

Bhargava (or Bhargav) is a surname of Brahmins whose Gotra is Bhargav. That is, those who are descendants of Muni Bhargav (Bhrigu). A Sanskrit saying states that Bhrugu jaayate iti Bhargava, which means that all those born of Bhrigu are Bhargavas.

Bhargavas are a very close knit community with strong internal relationships. Until recently, it was rare for Bhargavas to marry outside the community.

This is also a surname of a set of people from South India who use BHARGAV (without an A).

Bhargava is also name of a gotra of Shivalli Madhwa brahmins of Udupi.

Given/First Name

Bhargava (or Bhargav) is also a first name.It is another name for Parashurama, one of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. He is the son of Sage Jamadagni & Renuka. He was a manifestation of the ultimate divinity's need to balance 'dharma' and 'adharma' (harmony and disharmony) and consequently visited justice on many kings who had been abusing their power or had lost a hold on their ethics as protectors of their dominions. His time of activity comes to a close when he encounters Lord Rama (another of the avatars of Lord Vishnu).
