Everglades High School is a public high school located in Miramar, Florida. The school serves 4,200 students in grades 9 through 12. The current school hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. The principal is Dr. Paul Fetscher.

The 2006-2007 Teacher of the Year was awarded to Mr. Jackson Martin, educator in Chemistry, Physics, SECME and Genetics.[citation needed] The first president of Everglades was Emanuel Washington Jr in 2004. [1] For the 2007-2008 school year, Everglades made all incoming freshman to take classes to the portables at the at the former Charles W. Flanagan High School Annex due to overpopulation. Currently another high school is being constructed in Pembroke Pines, Florida, called LLL to resolve the overcrowding issue. Everglades High is currently rated a C school by the state of Florida with 71% of the students passing the math FCAT and 41% of the students passing the reading FCAT. Everglades also has one of the highest student to administrator ratio of 569:1, well above the state average.[2]

History

The temporary location was at the former Charles W. Flanagan High School Annex because of the ongoing final construction of the Everglades main building. The School schedule was held in double sessions during the months at the annex because of the large population, where the class of 2007 freshman had classes from 12:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. and upperclassmen had classes from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The class of 2004 of Everglades supposedly had a total of 12 senior students, all which graduated within five years. [3]

Athletics

Everglades currently offers a wide variety of various varsity and junior varsity sports for both boys and girls. The Varsity Football team became undefeated district champions (10-0) in 2006 and Everglades girl's Varsity Softball team became state champions in 2007. At every home football game, Kyle Carper of the 2008 senior class runs down with a pirate flag in celebration of a touchdown.[4]
