Sonipat (Hindi: सोनीपत) is an ancient town and a municipal council in Sonipat District in the state of Haryana, India. It is believed that it was founded as Suvarnaprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata. Another legend ascribed it to Raja Soni, the thirteenth descendent of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers.[citation needed]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Sonipat had a population of 216,213. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Sonipat has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Sonipat, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
