Shake 'n Bake

Shake 'n Bake is owned by Kraft Foods. It is a flavored coating for chicken (and sometimes pork) which is applied by placing chicken pieces in a bag containing the coating, closing the bag, and shaking. The coated chicken is then baked in a medium oven until done. Shake 'N' Bake is designed to mimic bread crumbs or flour, key ingredients in the preparation of fried chicken. Instead of frying the chicken after coating it with Shake 'N' Bake pieces, the chicken is then baked to further mimic the taste of fried chicken while enjoying a healthier alternative. First introduced in 1965, it is currently marketed under the Kraft brand.

Shake 'N' Bake is particularly noted for its iconic television commercials in the 1980s and 1990s starring such child actors as Carly Schroeder, Taylor Momsen, and Philip Amelio. In the ads, the aforementioned children help make Shake 'N' Bake with their mothers, enthusiastically exclaiming "And I helped!"

Slang uses of "Shake and Bake"

"Shake & Bake" was slang for quickly trained non-commissioned-officers during the Vietnam War.

The derivative "shake & bake" denotes a military technique involving use of high explosives and White phosphorus as an anti-personnel weapon.

"Shake and Bake" is a slang term for a forest firefighter's personal fire protection shelter, because the firefighter under it is shaken by the wind created by the fire and baked by the heat of the fire.

In medicine, "Shake and Bake" is a term used by HIV patients to describe the side effects of some anti-retroviral drugs that cause them to become febrile and develop rigors.

In the funeral industry, "shake and bake" is slang for cremation, often used disparagingly when trying to push more expensive funeral options.

In the safari industry, a "shake and bake" is a slang term for the heavily modified open-topped vehicles (usually Land Cruisers or Land Rovers) as those riding in the vehicle are shaken by the bumpy roads and "baked" by the sun.

In the 2006 film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Cal Naughton, Jr. and Ricky Bobby are known, respectively, as "Shake and Bake" on the NASCAR circuit. Naughton, Jr. says in the film that the nickname is "awesome", because shake and bake "rhyme" and "they're both verbs."

In basketball, it is also slang for "shaking" a defender off and scoring a basket.

The phrase "wake and bake", slang for recreational use of marijuana immediately upon rising from sleep, is derived from Shake 'n Bake.

In October 2007 an International Shake 'N' Bake Federation was created on Facebook. Users record themselves and other people doing a "Shake 'N' Bake" and post in online.
