State University of New York College of Optometry

The State University of New York State College of Optometry was established in 1971 as a result of a legislative mandate of New York State, USA. It is located in Manhattan in the City of New York. It is the only institution of its kind in New York State.

The College offers the degrees Doctor of Optometry, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Vision Science. Continuing education courses for practicing optometrists are also provided by the College.

The Optometric Center of New York, established in 1956, is now affiliated with the College. The Optometric Center of New York supports vision science research, patient care and scholarships and fellowships at the College and its clinical facility, the University Optometric Center. The University Optometric Center provides optometric services to the surrounding community and others. The Optometric Center is the largest outpatient eye clinic in the country serving over 200,000 patients annually.

SUNY College of Optometry has been ranked as one of the top Optometry schools in the nation with NBEO Part I pass rates far exceeding the national average (97% - 2006, 96% - 2007; National average ~75%). Furthermore, the range of specialties taught at the College included with the largest on-site clinic of any school in the country make SUNY a formidable choice in optometric education.

Former Student Council President and current 4th year intern, Joe Cheng, has made great strides in improving the academic and social life of the SUNY Optometry community. "SUNY Optometry is one of the foremost leading institutions of promoting and enhancing eyecare while also maintaining high standards in training future doctors to practice at the top of their ability," says Intern Cheng. "The community at SUNY Optomery is a small one therefore teamwork, networking, and a comfortable environment is crucial to success of our students. We do the best we can as student leaders to ensure and great learning and stimulating experience."

Note: Beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year, the SUNY College of Optometry will be implementing a revised professional program curriculum leading to the O.D. degree. The revised curriculum will be phased in beginning with the class entering in the Fall, 2008. A notable change is the traditional quarter system will be replaced by a semester system.
