Monarchos (born 1998) is a stallion Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Kentucky Derby in 2001. This thoroughbred's time was 1:59.97 around the 1 1/4 mile track. This was the third-fastest time in the race's history, behind Secretariat and Sham, both in 1973.
In 10 starts, Monarchos won 4 races, placed once, and showed three times. He failed to place in the top three in the Preakness Stakes, and showed in the Belmont Stakes.
Breeder Jim Squires has written an entertaining account of this "rags to riches" win, entitled "Horse of a Different Colour."
Monarchos was sired by Maria's Mon, and his dam was Regal Band. He currently stands in stud at Claiborne Farm, where he commands US$15,000 for a single live cover breeding. In his first set of foals, he produced five winning Thoroughbreds, but only one, Harborage, has raced in a Stakes race. He showed at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Championships.
