Just a Question from Icosahedronman

Hey fish and karate, I have another account, Prince Elfangor, that you blocked, and the reason is "troll". What kind of a @#&*-ing reason is that? Also, seeing as I haven't attempted to make an article or edit anything in over a year, I really think you are being overly harsh. I just found out about my being blocked when I went to edit the page on circles yesterday 'cause someone put a whole bunch of swears after the word circle. I see that it's been fixed today, but still. Just wanted to let you know that you're preventing me from removing terrible language from Wikipedia, rather than making articles 'cause I have nothing to write an article about. Fish and karate? Why not just one? Don't you feel sorry for the children you're depriving of fish and/or karate?? You heartless bastard. GlassCobra 08:19, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm GREEDY :) fish&karate 08:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

I saw your notice to POTW, I understand where you're coming from, but he's just not going to be talked around.. the last time he got, forgive me for the word, obsessive about retaining that bit of old business on his user and talk page, it led to the Arbitration Committee, and his second one year ban. At some point, we have to say, enough. I hope he takes the olive branch, I'm willing to unblock him myself, all he needs to do, is let old grudges die the death that they long since should have. But what I hope for and what I expect are two different things, unfortunately. SirFozzie (talk) 09:59, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I would love him to let it die, but I bet he doesn't. fish&karate 10:09, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • sighs* yup, he's completely ignored the discussion, except for cherry picking the two or three people who agreed with him, and ignored the 20-25 people who didn't. Can you try explaining to him at theis point, Wikipedia doesn't CARE about his grudge with Leonig, only the disruption that results from him continuously bringing it up? SirFozzie (talk)
I've tried. We'll see what he says. fish&karate 11:04, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well. I tried. I'm not going to let myself get dragged into a 20 hour argument with someone who attempts to win his arguments by aggravating his opponents to death :) I do appreciate the good faith you've shown to him, though. SirFozzie (talk) 11:35, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • chuckles* he's trying an end run around you by requesting an unblock. SirFozzie (talk) 20:29, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool

Within 24 hours of changing my username, I am the number one google hit for "fish and karate" (with or without quotes). ph34r. fish&karate 13:40, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For Google Australia, you're losing to this. And you're still way behind on this and this. Giggy (talk) 13:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lol...meanwhile, on-wiki, everyone is going to personify "fish and karate"...and the readers will think: but why "fish and karate" of all things? :) Ncmvocalist (talk) 13:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOVE the new user name per Miyagi, but regret that you're going to focus more on articles, since i've noticed you have a tendency to walk around not being an idiot in various venues. Although i realize the two are connected, hrmmm .... 86.44.27.188 (talk) 15:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-daddy

So I saw Fish and karate pop up on my watchlist, and I thought "That's a great name!" Then I click on the userpage, and I'm like "Ah, snaps, Miranda's probably going to be pissed." So then I click on the talk page, and BLADOW, it's j0o! I don't see why people change their names.... seems so silly. >_> Jennavecia (Talk) 17:01, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Irony Is Delicious ;) (yes I know, deliberate, but still.. delish!) SirFozzie (talk) 04:16, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, I would have other shit to be pissed about other than userpage design, Jennavecia. miranda 17:54, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection of {{Move and semi protected}}

Why? It's transcluded on 1 (one) page. —Ms2ger (talk) 19:52, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's not getting used as much as I thought it would be. The article it is being used is particularly fraught. Would you like to change it? fish&karate 20:39, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've put up a new version at {{Move and semi protected/Sandbox}}. It does the same, in about 3.5% of the lines. I think that a more generic solution in {{pp-meta}} would be more useful in the long term, though. —Ms2ger (talk) 08:22, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You may be right. I have changed the code based on the sandbox version; thank you. I'm not very good at wiki markup. fish&karate 10:27, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So since you are a fish now....

Can I slap you with a trout? :-P Anyway, regarding the "reward" concerning the re-design page. I would like for the reward to go to the Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross. If you need any help, feel free to e-mail me. Thanks. miranda 17:59, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will make a donation tonight when I can dig out my card. fish&karate 10:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They are $10 richer. Thanks for pimping my page! fish&karate 21:51, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not to be a PITA again, but most CDs and DVDs in the U.S. cost between $11 and $16. So, could you please donate 1 to 6 more dollars? Besides, Houston needs all of the help they can get. Whoever lives in this area and thought they could get "away" from the perfect storm is just bullshitting. miranda 14:48, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, sorry - I am grateful for your redesigning my userpage, and have made a donation to your chosen charity as requested; please don't ask for more. fish&karate 14:59, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. miranda 20:00, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bring this up again....

But someone has decided to jump in and unblock Pigsonthewing without requiring that he drop the feud. I've brought it up in the ANI section and temporarily unarchived the section. SirFozzie (talk) 22:35, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

Thank you for supporting me in my RfA, which passed with a count of (166/43/7). I appreciate your comments and in my actions as an administrator I will endeavor to maintain the trust you have placed in me. I am honored by your trust and your support. Thank you, Cirt (talk) 03:12, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI...

Your top right user box on your user page is munged - the one that says "I'm an administrator" has a space bug introduced with your new username (which now has spaces). I'd fix it but it's protected. ATren (talk) 06:16, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, bother. Now  Fixed - thanks fish&karate 14:04, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AN/I

In case your being done with the discussion means that you would not see my reply... I think you must have missed Andy's agreement to not repost the material. I quoted and linked to it on AN/I. That is WHY I am so annoyed with the people calling for Adambro's head. If he'd unblocked without such an agreement from Andy it would be a disputable case. But to make such a fuss about it after the user had agreed? Completely unacceptable IMO. --CBD 13:49, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I missed that completely - in that case, the unblock was totally appropriate, and you are right to castigate all the complainants. fish&karate 14:07, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me, the article was not promotional at all. I have no link to the company whatsoever. The reason all the sources are from there is that it was the easiest place to source it from at first glance. There are few links elsewhere. I would like your thoughts on how to improve the article, rather than just deleting it. Alex Holowczak (talk) 11:48, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, A7 states that if it is school related (which it was), it must not be up for speedy deletion, it says it must go to articles for deletion, for a more thorough analysis. There were therefore no grounds for a speedy deletion. Alex Holowczak (talk) 11:51, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Alex, if there are no links elsewhere, then it is unlikely the article would meet our notability criteria for corporations (see here for the criteria). In order to meet our verifiability requirements, an article must be reliably sourced; that is, it must not use itself as a reference - it must use reliable, published, third-party sources. fish&karate 11:52, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And no, WP:CSD#A7 states "If controversial, as with schools, list the article at Articles for deletion instead." It does not say "school-related". fish&karate 11:54, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've asked this same question to Truly... Can't remember his name, but you get the idea. How many external sources are required for it to suddenly cross the threshold into perfectly acceptable? Alex Holowczak (talk) 12:03, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
More than none (which is what it had). "Multiple" is usually given (ie, more than one). fish&karate 12:04, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Iraqi Revolutionaries?"

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was well known as a Jordanian. His replacement, Abu Ayyub Al-Masri is an Egyptian. You allow people to add userboxes with monsters like Joseph Stalin, and other people whether they're mosnters or not, and yet I can't add a poster condemning them? God forbid, anybody shour add an image of Santa Claus to their userpages, or some long lost realitves of the real Saint Nicholas might come out and deprive people of the right to use that. ----DanTD (talk) 12:28, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can condemn who or what you want, so long as you don't steal images to do so. fish&karate 12:31, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That tends to defeat the purpose. ----DanTD (talk) 12:45, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How so? fish&karate 12:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean "How so?" They're all murderous leaders of different factions that the anti-war movement has falsley lumped into as fighting for the same cause, despite evidence to the contrary. Not just because they've each killed US and other coalition troops, but because they've also killed Iraqis and others who don't fit in with their respected agendas. Each person represents three different factions. Take them out, and you've got NOTHING! ----DanTD (talk) 16:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quite funny

As vandalism goes - click here and just keep clicking "next edit" until you get to the protection. I "LOL"d, as you kids say. What is it with Greg Louganis? fish&karate 14:30, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hahaha, great stuff! Maybe they got Wikipedia and Uncyclopedia confused... Codeine (talk) 14:50, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image owner granted permission to use the image in an e-mail to me dated 10 September 2008. I will forward that e-mail to you upon request. Please leave the image alone. best wishes. Bob BScar23625 (talk) 16:03, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you empty out this category and delete it? WP:CAT-R says it's ok to categorize redirects in this manner. I'm sure you don't plan on doing the same to Category:Shinigami in Bleach, as well Category:EastEnders characters, Category:Super Smash Bros. fighters, and especially Category:Banksia taxa by common name. Please give a good reason for this, or bring everything back. Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 02:54, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

?? The category had been tagged for deletion by a member of the project, after clearing it months ago, and every single entry in the category was a redirect to the same list article. fish&karate 10:00, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Challenge

Here you go Neil, as I suspect you see a fair few pages in your wiki-travels and I know you have a bee in yer bonnet about cruft. In efforts to counteract systemic bias with sticks rather than carrots (and seeing what non-obscure stubs remain out there), i have listed a minicompetition of sorts here, so I'd be intrigued what comes up. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:31, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

Updated DYK query On 19 September, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Associazione Volontari Italiani Sangue, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

--Jordan Contribs 09:43, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for saving the article "Associazione Volontari Italiani Sangue"

This is all the more appreciated since the article is about a charitable and non-lucrative organization. You did a really wonderful work and now the article is even more complete than the Italian version from which I sourced my article.

MoinMoin

Hi Fish. No, it doesn't make sense: the template clearly claims that the subject is not notable: "This article may not meet the general notability guideline..."; "please expand or rewrite the article to establish its notability"; "If notability cannot be established, the article is more likely to be considered for redirection, merge or deletion". I'm not a Wikipedia guru, so I have to go on what the template says, which I read as "this subject is non-notable and the article will be soon deleted unless someone can prove otherwise". Thanks. --R27182818 (talk) 15:08, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

date-ranges

Thanks so much for this feedback. Lightmouse is busy trying to debug something from the script, and clearly what was safe is now not. (Actually, I think he's already fixed it.) Will report it to him immediately; we rely on such messages. And I fear that the niceties of date-range puncuation are not his thing. Sorry for the inconvenience. I presume that you've fixed it; if not, buzz me and I'll do so. Tony (talk) 14:08, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I just reverted the edit. As and when the script is working, it can always be run through again. fish&karate 14:09, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

# of RFAs

Just a tiny correction, we've had ~3,900 RFAs, not 1,500, also we've had about 100 RFBs. Figured that might change your statistics a bit. MBisanz talk 12:20, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They were "back of a coaster" stats anyway - that just makes the RFA processes' success rate nearer to 99%! But thanks for the info. fish&karate 12:22, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Contributions/Proto

Just out of curiosity, do you have any idea why Special:Contributions/Proto isn't empty like it normally is after an account rename? Everyme 12:37, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I recreated the account and use it for a bit of wikignoming from time to time. You have just reminded me that I removed my note regarding this when I changed my userpage recently. I will put something about it on the talk page header here. fish&karate 12:43, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, ok. Everyme 13:22, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Kelly

Andrew is still making inflammatory remarks on his talk page and probably elsewhere too, after you warned him. While I realize there is zero chance anyone will actually have the guts to block Andrew, ever. It does suggest that policies need to be put into place to prevent this. Editors who promote racism are quickly removed yet this is deemed somehow less discriminatory. — Realist2 14:21, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are policies in place. WP:NPA, WP:CIVIL, WP:SOAPBOX. I am keeping an eye on things, don't worry - but in my opinion Andrew hasn't said anything particularly offensive or inflammatory since the warning. fish&karate 14:25, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hope someone monitors it, I'm already too involved and shall withdraw. — Realist2 15:10, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I recommend you do not censor or block Mr. Kelly at this time. I'm convinced that he's playing a game of some sort, and that you should let it play out. It is written that Judas went out and hanged himself. This Mr. Kelly will eventually get enough rope to go therefore and do likewise, metaphorically speaking. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 06:56, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you are hungry ;-)

As a small thank you for taking the time and pruning all those discussions at my RfA and moving them to the talk page. I really appreciate your help! Regards SoWhy 14:50, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, you are receiving this message because you voted in the last FAC for this article. Currently, it is undergoing a peer review and I invite you to come view the page and offer any suggestions for improvement here [2]. Over the past three months, the page has been improved with additional scholarly works, trims, two new sections suggested in and attention to concerns raised during the last FAC. Thanks in advance for your time, attention and help to bring this important article to FA. NancyHeise talk 23:51, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SoWhy RfA

Just a note that I think the sections to which extended discussion has been moved should always be visibly linked to from that spot in the RfA page from where the discussion was excised. This is doubly true when not all of the moved comments are contributing to the disruption which led to the moving of the thread. I've added links to all the sections. I also noticed that Jimmi Hugh's withdrawn support has been moved to the talk page entirely, where it is effectively hidden from the view of the vast majority of users who only look at the RfA page itself. Imho, that should practically never be done unless the user who cast the original vote decides to remove it from the RfA page him/herself. There should at least be some kind of link to indicate that something has been excised. Since these are recurring issues in RfAs, I'm starting a thread at WT:RfA to draw wider attention to the issue since I've frequently seen people move stuff to RfA talk pages without including a link with their moving notice.
