Gregory-Lincoln Education Center
Gregory-Lincoln Education Center is a combined primary and secondary school located at 1101 Taft in the Fourth Ward area of Houston, Texas, United States.
Gregory-Lincoln, a combined elementary and middle school that serves grades Kindergarten through 8, is a part of the Houston Independent School District.
Gregory-Lincoln has a fine arts magnet that takes students in both the elementary and middle school levels.
As of 2006 Johnnie Jackson is the principal administrator of Gregory-Lincoln.
History
A campus was built in 1966 [1].
In the early 2000s it was announced that Gregory-Lincoln would receive a new campus that would be on the site of the old campus. Initially HISD planned to locate the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts on the same site. Rumors of a American Civil War grave site prevented any development for several years [2]. In 2006 Houston ISD did not find any new grave sites and started development of Gregory-Lincoln [3]. The new Gregory-Lincoln campus is scheduled to be completed by 2008 [4] [5].
The development was controversial since it meant using eminent domain to seize property owned by existing residents. The property includes historical houses.
Student body
During the 2004-2005 school year [6], Gregory-Lincoln had 770 students. During the 2000-2001 school year the school had 906 students; gentrification of the areas within the elementary and middle school attendance boundaries has caused enrollment to drop [7].
During the 2004-2005 school year, school was mostly African-American, with 58% of its students being African-American. The school had a large Hispanic minority, which made up 39% of the student body. Non-Hispanic White students and Asian American students each made up 1% of the student body. There were no Native American students enrolled at Gregory-Lincoln.
91% of the students qualified for free or reduced lunch.
School uniforms
Gregory-Lincoln requires school uniforms [8] [9] (PDF file).
All students must wear red, white, or burgundy polo shirts. Students must wear blue or khaki trousers, shorts, or skirts.
The Texas Education Agency specified that the parents and/or guardians of students zoned to a school with uniforms may apply for a waiver to opt out of the uniform policy so their children do not have to wear the uniform [10]; parents must specify "bona fide" reasons, such as religious reasons or philosophical objections.
Neighborhoods served by Gregory-Lincoln
The elementary attendance boundary includes the Fourth Ward, a small portion of Midtown, and a small portion of Downtown.
The middle school attendance boundary includes the Fourth Ward, almost all of Midtown (the portion north of U.S. Highway 59), portions of Neartown Houston east of Montrose Boulevard, Avondale, and North Montrose (the Downtown portion of the elementary attendance zone does not continue on to Gregory-Lincoln Middle School, and students instead attend middle school at the E. O. Smith Education Center).
Residents zoned to the Downtown portion for elementary school must apply for a transfer for the Gregory-Lincoln middle school program if they wish to continue attending Gregory-Lincoln.
Feeder patterns
Almost all of the areas zoned to Gregory-Lincoln for elementary school continue on to Gregory-Lincoln Middle School. And exception to this is the Downtown portion of the elementary school attendance zone, which continues on to E.O. Smith Education Center for middle school.
