The Berliner Fernsehturm is a TV Tower in Berlin, Germany. It is currently the tallest free-standing structure by pinacle height in Germany, although if plans for the Millennium Tower in Frankfurt, Germany are carried out, it will lose this title in 2006. It is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.

Construction on the tower was begun in 1965 and would last four years. It was officially opened to the public in October, 1969. Since that date, it has attracted nearly 37,000,000 visitors from all corners of the world. Since 1993, the tower has been under the process of restoration that has taken place in various stages. During one of these phases, the tower was closed for six months so that new KONE elevators could be installed. These new elevators are able to cover a height of 200 meters in just 40 seconds. The tower was reopened after installation on May 1, 1994.

Various Heights:

  • Base to Observation Deck: 203.8 meters
  • Base to Roof: 250 meters
  • Base to Top of Antenna: 368 meters
