Rehan Jahangir Poncha (Hindi: रेहान जहांगीर पोंचा; born on August 3, 1986 in Karnataka) is an Indian swimmer, who specialized in backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley events.[1] He is a five-time national champion, and a six-time national record holder for his respective categories.[2] Poncha also shattered two of his records for the freestyle and medley relay events at the 2009 Asian Swimming Championships in Foshan, China, along with his teammates Sandeep Sejwal, Virdhawal Khade, and Aaron D'Souza.[3]

Poncha represented India at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed for the men's 200 m butterfly, an event which was later dominated by American swimmer and all-time Olympian Michael Phelps. He swam in the first heat against Peru's Emmanuel Crescimbeni, Croatia's Nikša Roki, and Javier Hernández Maradiaga. He finished the race in second place by twenty-hundredths of a second (0.24) ahead of Crescimbeni, with a time of 2:01.89. Poncha, however, failed to advance into the semi-finals, as he placed fortieth out of forty-four swimmers in the overall rankings.[4]

At the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, Poncha set a national record for the men's 200 m backstroke, with an impressive time of 2:06.92.[5]
