He went to University of Maryland. He was drafted by the 49ers in the 1st round (6th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft and the 49ers signed him to a deal that makes him the highest paid tight end in the National Football League (5 years, $23 million).

He was the top tight end prospect in the NFL Draft, due to a strong performance at the scouting combine. While at the combine, he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.38 seconds, which was faster than most wide receivers and running backs. It is believed to be the fastest time ever recorded by a tight end, and has been confirmed as being the fastest time by a Maryland tight end. He is also a workout warrior, who set school strength records (in spring of 2005) for a TE in the bench press (460 pounds), power-clean (335 pounds), and squat (685 pounds). He also led all tight ends at the 2006 combine with a broad jump of 10 feet 8 inches and a vertical leap of 42 inches. His display of physical tools at the combine greatly improved his draft status. In his junior year at Maryland, he had the second most receiving yards of any player in the ACC.

Leading up to the draft, Vernon, along with fellow prospects A. J. Hawk and Jeremy Bloom, appeared in ads for Under Armour's new line of football cleats, with the slogan Click Clack (I think they hear us coming).
