"'''Strange Fruit'''" is a song performed most famously by [[Billie Holiday]]. It condemned American [[racism]], particularly the [[lynching]] of [[African American]]s that had occurred chiefly in the [[Southern United States|South]] but also in the North for decades before this was written. Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the [[List of Grammy Hall of Fame Award recipients Q-Z|Grammy Hall of Fame]] in 1978.<ref>[http://www.grammy.com/Recording_Academy/Awards/Hall_Of_Fame/#s Grammy Hall of Fame]</ref> It was also included in the list of ''[[Songs of the Century]]'', by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

[[Image:ThomasShippAbramSmith.jpg|thumb|300px|right|The photograph that was cited by the songwriter as the inspiration for the song: Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, August 7, 1930.]]
"Strange Fruit" began as a poem written by [[Abel Meeropol]], a Jewish high-school teacher from the Bronx, about the lynching of two black men. He published under the pen name Lewis Allan (the two names he and wife would have named their own children).<ref>David Margolick, ''Strange Fruit: Billie Holiday, Café Society, and an Early Cry for Civil Rights'' (Philadelphia: Running Press, 2000), pp. 25-27.</ref> Meeropol and his wife adopted Robert and Michael, sons of [[Julius and Ethel Rosenberg]], who were convicted of espionage and executed by the United States ,<ref>Robin Shulman: ''Rosenberg Sons Say Father Was Guilty, Mother Was Framed.'' Washington Post, September 23, 2008.</ref>

Meeropol wrote "Strange Fruit" to express his horror at lynchings after seeing [[Lawrence Beitler]]'s photograph of the lynching of [[Thomas Shipp]] and [[Abram Smith]] in [[Marion, Indiana]]. He published the poem in 1937 in ''The New York Teacher'', a union magazine. Though Meeropol/Allan had often asked others (notably [[Earl Robinson]]) to set his poems to music, he set ''Strange Fruit'' to music himself. The song gained a certain success as a protest song in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at [[Madison Square Garden]].<ref>Margolick, ''Strange Fruit'', pp. 36-37.</ref>

[[Barney Josephson]], the founder of [[Cafe Society]] in Greenwich Village, New York's first integrated nightclub, heard the song and introduced it to [[Billie Holiday]]. Holiday performed the song at Cafe Society in 1939. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation. Holiday later said that because the imagery in "Strange Fruit" reminded her of her father, she persisted in singing it. The song became a regular part of Holiday's live performances.<ref>Margolick, ''Strange Fruit'', pp. 40-46.</ref>

Holiday approached her recording label, Columbia, about recording the song. Columbia, fearing a backlash by record retailers in the South, as well as negative reaction from affiliates of Columbia's co-owned radio network, [[CBS]], refused to record the song. <ref>Margolick, ''Strange Fruit'', pp. 61-62.</ref> Even her great producer at Columbia, John Hammond, refused. In frustration she turned to her friend [[Milt Gabler]] (uncle of comedian Billy Crystal) whose [[Commodore Records|Commodore]] label produced alternative jazz. Holiday sang the song for him a cappella which so moved Gabler that he wept. In 1939 Gabler worked out a special arrangement with Vocalian Records to record and distribute the song <ref>Billy Chrystal, "700 Sundays", pp. 46-47.</ref> and Columbia allowed Holiday a one-session release from her contract in order to record it.

She recorded two major sessions at Commodore, one in 1939 and one in 1944. "Strange Fruit" was highly regarded. In time it became Holiday's biggest selling record. Though the song became a staple of her live performances, Holiday's accompanist Bobby Tucker recalled that Holiday would break down every time after she sang it.
== Perl script to separate red and blue links for [[WP:MEA]] ==
I am currently looking for help (a perl script) to parse and separate red and blue links for various lists at [[WP:MEA|Missing encyclopedic articles]]. I have made a request at [[Wikipedia:Computer_help_desk#New_cases]], but it has languished for over a week. There was a [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Mw links|script]] that does some of what we need it to do developed by [[User:Avar|Avar]], but it only works on a few of the many lists we are currently working on. Specifically I'm looking for something that would separate and sort a list like this:

In her autobiography ''[[Lady Sings the Blues (book)|Lady Sings the Blues]]'', Holiday suggested that she, together with Lewis Allan, her accompanist [[Sonny White]], and arranger [[Danny Mendelsohn]], put the poem to music. David Margolick and Hilton Als dismissed that claim in their work ''Strange Fruit: The Biography of a Song''. They wrote that hers was "an account that may set a record for most misinformation per column inch". When challenged, Holiday&mdash;whose autobiography had been [[ghostwriter|ghostwritten]] by William Dufty&mdash;claimed, "I ain't never read that book."<ref>Margolick, ''Strange Fruit'', pp. 31-32.</ref>

==Meaning==
#[[Link4]] Renumbering because of space
The "strange fruit" referred to in the song are the bodies of African American men hanged during a lynching. They contrast the pastoral scenes of the South with the ugliness of racist violence. The lyrics were so chilling that Holiday later said "The first time I sang it, I thought it was a mistake. There wasn't even a patter of applause when I finished. Then a lone person began to clap nervously. Then suddenly everyone was clapping and cheering."

==Impact==
into a list like this
Barney Josephson recognized the impact of the song and insisted that Holiday close all her shows with it. Just as the song was about to begin, waiters would stop serving, the lights in club would be turned off, and a single pin spotlight would illuminate Holiday on stage. During the musical introduction, Holiday would stand with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer.

The song ultimately became the anthem of the anti-lynching movement. The dark imagery of the lyrics struck a chord. It also contributed to what would later become the [[Civil Rights movement]] of the 50s and 60s.

The song became an instant success and was most identified with Holiday. Numerous other singers have performed it. In October 1939, [[Samuel Grafton]] of ''[[The New York Post]]'' described "Strange Fruit": "If the anger of the exploited ever mounts high enough in the South, it now has its [[Marseillaise]]."
This is a worst case example. The current script works well, but it evaluates link by link, not line by line and so [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:1911_Encyclopedia_topics/1|any comments]] about the link would be removed.

In December, 1999, [[Time (magazine)]] magazine called it the song of the century.<ref>Billy Crystal, "700 Sundays", pp. 47</ref>
See [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles#Separating_red_and_blue_links|separting reds and blues]] for more comments.

In 2002, the [[Library of Congress]] honored the song as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to be added to the [[National Recording Registry]].

== Re Bluebot + tags ==
Hi, basically bluebot tags with <nowiki>{{wikify-date|xxx}}</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{stub}}</nowiki> as when it comes across those articles while doing other tasks, most often this is when it is '''bolding''' the first occurrance of the title. For a while I had it scanning new pages as well, which was fairly successful, but I don't leave my computer on all the time, and it was tagging sooo many as wikify (many of which would get deleted) that I began to think it was better to just work off database scans, as these tended to be older, and therefore less likely to be copyvios or other candidates for deletion. The criteria for adding a tag used to be calculated from the number of links dived by article length, but I found this doesnt work too well, so now it only tags if there are less than 4 links as well. thanks [[User:Bluemoose|Martin]] 10:43, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[[Serbia]]n rock musician, journalist and writer [[Dejan Cukić]] wrote about "Strange Fruit" among forty-five other songs that changed history of [[popular music]] in his book ''[[45 obrtaja: Priče o pesmama]]''.
:Also, it has been my ambition to get every article that needs it to be tagged with <nowiki>{{wikify}}</nowiki>, but there are soo many that it would be too much to do them all in one go, I was aiming to do a few thousand a month. Maybe we should set a target for the size of each wikify-by-month category? I would say 3000 is probably about right. [[User:Bluemoose|Martin]] 14:52, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

== Wikisource inclusion ==
The 1944 novel ''[[Strange Fruit (novel)|Strange Fruit]]'' by author [[Lillian Smith]], was said to have been inspired by Billie Holiday's version of the song.
I noticed you have recently tagged some articles for moving to Wikisource. I wanted to talk to you especially about the splitting off of data from and article and then tagging it for WS. The English Wikisource community has recently decided to exclude all data and reference material which is not attached to a larger work available on Wikisource. Although we have not yet deleted the material which currently exists at WS, please be aware this sort of material will no longer be accepted. --[[User:BirgitteSB|<font color="#f4a460 ">Birgitte§β</font>]] ʈ [[User talk:BirgitteSB|<small><font color="#778899">Talk</font></small>]] 03:52, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
:I don't remember doing this recently; which articles do you mean? Is this new policy explained somewhere on Wikisource? I poked around a bit and didn't see anything, and I'm not sure I entirely understand the decision. -- [[User:Beland|Beland]] 04:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
::The data I remember seeing was some kind of immigration figures. I believe [[s:Wikisource:What Wikisource includes#Reference material]] has been partially updated, there is still some disscusion about the details. Basically if we had the entire report that include the immigration data we would accept it, but we are not accepting unaffiliated reference material. The original disscussion can be found at [[s:Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2006/04#Inclusion of reference data on Wikisource]]. The decison to exclude this material met with no opposition and only one neutral editior, let me know if you have any further questions.--[[User:BirgitteSB|<font color="#f4a460 ">Birgitte§β</font>]] ʈ [[User talk:BirgitteSB|<small><font color="#778899">Talk</font></small>]] 13:53, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
:::I poked through my contributions for the past month, and I don't see anything being tagged for Wikisource, but I'll take your word for it. I think I see why wikisource considers reference material outside of its scope; probably you'll want to transfer that information to Wikibooks. -- [[User:Beland|Beland]] 15:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
::::[[United States immigration statistics]] was the article I removed the move to wikisource tag from. The history shows you created it and the tag was there in the earliest version. It was not yet moved to WS so I wanted to point it out to you since it seems you thought it did not belong on WP. I imagine the change in guidelines will cause some confusion for a while, so I am trying to slowly spread the word. --[[User:BirgitteSB|<font color="#f4a460 ">Birgitte§β</font>]] ʈ [[User talk:BirgitteSB|<small><font color="#778899">Talk</font></small>]] 23:45, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Sticky Fingaz, Pete Rock, Khadafi & Cappadonna, did a song dedicated to strange fruit with the same title, the song featured a sample from the original that was reversed.
Siouxsie and the Banshees also did a chilling version of the song.
A dazzling hip-hop version also exists, by Danja Mowf, rapped from the vantage point of one of the lynching victims. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHEi7_-m1Yo]

== Categories ==

The categorization system is having growing pains. There seem to be several different view about what our category system should be; a way to browse, an index of articles, a classification system, and/or a database search tool. Each of these views leads editors to different conclusions about how categories should be populated, and many conflicts result. To deal with these problems, [[User:Rick Block|Rick Block]] and I have been working on [[Wikipedia:Category intersection|a proposal to add the ability to create category intersections]]. We think our proposal will address these problems and add some very useful new features. We are asking editors and developers concerned with categorizaton problems to take a look. == Yet another analysis project that screams "Beland!" ==

Hi - I've proposed a wikipedia wide project to find and eliminate instances within infobox-style templates of the anti-accessible technique of creating multiple visual rows withn a single row by embedding matching HTML breaks in two (or more) adjacent columns in a table, please see [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability#Infobox accessibility issue]]. So far, no one has signed up or in any way acknowledged that this is a problem worth pursuing (screw them blind folks - who needs em!). In any event, if you could whip up a little analysis program to find likely instances (difficult to be exact, but perhaps references to templates with multiple parameters whose values include an HTML break - being exact requires either looking at the rendered HTML or interpreting the template) it might help folks realize the magnitude of the problem. I'm pretty sure this is very widespread, and I've verified with a blind wikipedia user that it is a problem. If you could help, I'd appreciate it. -- [[user:Rick Block|Rick Block]] <small>([[user talk:Rick Block|talk]])</small> 04:13, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

==Pearle request==
Hey Beland,

I was looking at [[user:Pearle|Pearle]], and it said you can generate reports showing the tree structure of categories, including articles. Does this include a report of how long the article in the categories are?

I ask because I used to use CatScan all the time. I spend a lot of time working on [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs]], which has a huge amount of short stub articles. CatScan was really useful in identifying and listing stub articles, and I liked being able to start with the shortest, most incomplete articles first.

However, CatScan hasn't worked in many months (since April 11th!), and it appears permanantly offline on en.wikipedia. Is it possible for you to use Pearle to come up with a list of the shortest articles in [[:Category:Dinosaurs]], preferably sorted by size? The category depth would have to be about six, because there are around six levels of depth. Can it be done? I can use pop-ups, but it takes hours because there are between 1,200 and 2,000 dinosaur articles; I've only sorted letter A, and am not relishing the thought of B thru Z.

I don't see any images from Commons showing up on Google or Yahoo images search. Does anyone know why? Is this intentional? -- [[User:Beland|Beland]] 02:42, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

:It's a known problem, but not exactly intentional. Search engines fail to index our pages properly, because the URLs end in things like "jpg", which they tend to think are images rather than image pages in our case. == PNA run dropped "Expert attention needed" entries ==

When Pearle was given the PNA sorting update in early November (much needed - thanks), I noticed that Pearle seems not to be producing any "Expert attention needed" list entries -- all the PNA pages I've seen have 0 entries. For instance page [[Tenant-in-chief]] still has an {expert} tag but is no longer in any list on [[Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Business]].

Now I [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Pages_needing_attention/Technology see] that someone else has commented on this problem. As PNA is the topic-sorted access path, this "Expert attention needed" list is one of the more important article lists to have on PNA.

BTW, there are a few new pages that Pearle/PNA could process. I'll try to put together a list for you to feed her. -[[User:R. S. Shaw|R. S. Shaw]] 04:30, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

==A question about a Perl script...==
There's a script that [[User:Cedars]] used to run that's written in Perl I think that used to maintain the main [[WP:GA]] page. The problem is, Cedars just left suddenly after some fair use on publicity images thing, and now I don't think anyone knows how to use it :/. I was told you might be able to help tell us how the script works, at first I thought it was just something that you put in that file everyone has that loads when you log in that can change things, but just reading how he's commented his code, it looks like this is some indepedent application that's moving around files and needing some odd file opening protocols. Its all [[User:Cedars/gaauto.pl]], and the thing is, it's about the only reliable and easy way we have to keep the GA list properly mantained. If there's anything you can tell us about how to use this script, I know i'd appreciate it, and although I can't speak for all the other GA editors i'm mostly certain they'd be thankful as well :). == Maps for Wikipedia 1.0 ==

Hi, I saw your posting on [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Core topics/Core topics COTF|the core topics COTF]] a while ago, but finally got time to reply. I am interested in this idea, especially since I reviewed all of the country and global city articles for [[WP:V0.5|Version 0.5]]. Theoretically it should be struck from the nominations list as it is not a core topic article, but I think you're right that these maps are "core" material for our CD releases. If you can outline exactly how people can help with this, and exactly what is needed, I'll vote for it myself, and maybe we can work on it. The description [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Maps/Requested_and_orphan_maps#Countries|here]] is probably fine for people at the map project, but I think I would like to see a couple of map examples of what you think is good, and a couple that are not good enough. Let me know what you think. Thanks, [[User:Walkerma|Walkerma]] 04:11, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

== Luas ==

Hi Beland,

I saw your post on the talk page for Luas - not sure if you're still watching that page or not. You were asking about a map that showed the layout of the stops and where they were in Dublin, instead of just floating in white space. I'm from Dublin so I said I'd give it a shot but I can't seem to find any maps that are free to use for this sort of thing. If you had any idea where we could source a free map of Dublin I could mark the stop locations. Beyond that, it's not looking good - for some reason there don't seem to be any proper maps with stops marked on them on any of the Luas-related websites. Unfortunately the reasonable-sounding change you made on the "open access" disam page completely lost contact with the main open access article--open access publishing is a subsidiary article. == Prehistoric medicine ==

Thanks for taking the time to go over the article Prehistoric medicine, I'm very appreciative of you pointing out things that can be corrected (and I will in due course correct all of them). However I'm a little surprised, and saddened, by the article being downgraded to a Start-class (I was hoping for the opposite in some portals, since it's better than the examples they give), but I guess it is a necessary drop in order to bring in back up in the near future to a GA-Status (I'm an optimist at heart).

The only concern I have is with the order in which you've put the parts of the article; I realise your thinking behind the changes, but I have to disagree with your ordering and for the benefit of correcting the references (which I'm finding difficult currently), and return them to their original state, at least for the time being.

Can I count on you to reassess the article in the future, if I notified you? That would be very helpful. Thanks for your work on the article Beland, it's no wonder you're an administrator; you're a very helpful and skilled person; I'd have never been able to correct the things you have. MasterOfHisOwnDomain (talk) 14:58, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

:It was an interesting subject to ponder; I'd be happy to do so again in the future. As for the ordering, one could argue it should go either at the top (as an important qualification for the semi-speculation that's to follow) or the bottom (as a relatively unimportant, "oh, and here's how we know that"). If reverting makes it easier to straighten things out, that's fine by me. Thanks for your work on the subject, Beland (talk) 15:22, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

::No problem; I was very surprised when I created the article back in 2007, that it hadn't already been made. It seemed (and does still to a degree seem) that quite a few of the Prehistory and time-specific medicine articles were in need of work, and so I decided that I would make Prehistoric medicine a GA-status article, hence all the work I've pumped into it. I think it's still a long way of that mark yet, but it's quite tough adding new content to article solely on your own, so I'm proud it's achieved it's current state. People like yourself who can correct grammatical errors and point out what the article is lacking and needs have really helped, so I'm glad you are happy to reassess it again. "Strange Fruit"
Song
A-side"Fine and Mellow"

"Strange Fruit" is a song performed most famously by Billie Holiday. It condemned American racism, particularly the lynching of African Americans that had occurred chiefly in the South but also in the North for decades before this was written. Holiday's version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978.[2] It was also included in the list of Songs of the Century, by the Recording Industry of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Author

The photograph that was cited by the songwriter as the inspiration for the song: Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, August 7, 1930.

"Strange Fruit" began as a poem written by Abel Meeropol, a Jewish high-school teacher from the Bronx, about the lynching of two black men. He published under the pen name Lewis Allan (the two names he and wife would have named their own children).[3] Meeropol and his wife adopted Robert and Michael, sons of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of espionage and executed by the United States ,[4]

Meeropol wrote "Strange Fruit" to express his horror at lynchings after seeing Lawrence Beitler's photograph of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana. He published the poem in 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine. Though Meeropol/Allan had often asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set Strange Fruit to music himself. The song gained a certain success as a protest song in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden.[5]

Barney Josephson, the founder of Cafe Society in Greenwich Village, New York's first integrated nightclub, heard the song and introduced it to Billie Holiday. Holiday performed the song at Cafe Society in 1939. She said that singing it made her fearful of retaliation. Holiday later said that because the imagery in "Strange Fruit" reminded her of her father, she persisted in singing it. The song became a regular part of Holiday's live performances.[6]

Holiday approached her recording label, Columbia, about recording the song. Columbia, fearing a backlash by record retailers in the South, as well as negative reaction from affiliates of Columbia's co-owned radio network, CBS, refused to record the song. [7] Even her great producer at Columbia, John Hammond, refused. In frustration she turned to her friend Milt Gabler (uncle of comedian Billy Crystal) whose Commodore label produced alternative jazz. Holiday sang the song for him a cappella which so moved Gabler that he wept. In 1939 Gabler worked out a special arrangement with Vocalian Records to record and distribute the song [8] and Columbia allowed Holiday a one-session release from her contract in order to record it.

In her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues, Holiday suggested that she, together with Lewis Allan, her accompanist Sonny White, and arranger Danny Mendelsohn, put the poem to music. David Margolick and Hilton Als dismissed that claim in their work Strange Fruit: The Biography of a Song. They wrote that hers was "an account that may set a record for most misinformation per column inch". When challenged, Holiday—whose autobiography had been ghostwritten by William Dufty—claimed, "I ain't never read that book."[9]

Meaning

The "strange fruit" referred to in the song are the bodies of African American men hanged during a lynching. They contrast the pastoral scenes of the South with the ugliness of racist violence. The lyrics were so chilling that Holiday later said "The first time I sang it, I thought it was a mistake. There wasn't even a patter of applause when I finished. Then a lone person began to clap nervously. Then suddenly everyone was clapping and cheering."

Impact

Barney Josephson recognized the impact of the song and insisted that Holiday close all her shows with it. Just as the song was about to begin, waiters would stop serving, the lights in club would be turned off, and a single pin spotlight would illuminate Holiday on stage. During the musical introduction, Holiday would stand with her eyes closed, as if she were evoking a prayer.

The song ultimately became the anthem of the anti-lynching movement. The dark imagery of the lyrics struck a chord. It also contributed to what would later become the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s.

The song became an instant success and was most identified with Holiday. Numerous other singers have performed it. In October 1939, Samuel Grafton of The New York Post described "Strange Fruit": "If the anger of the exploited ever mounts high enough in the South, it now has its Marseillaise."

In December, 1999, Time (magazine) magazine called it the song of the century.[10]

In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the song as one of 50 recordings chosen that year to be added to the National Recording Registry.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution listed the song as Number One on 100 Songs of the South. [11]

Bob Dylan cited "Strange Fruit" as an influence in the 2005 documentary No Direction Home. The movie also had a brief clip of Holiday singing.

Serbian rock musician, journalist and writer Dejan Cukić wrote about "Strange Fruit" among forty-five other songs that changed history of popular music in his book 45 obrtaja: Priče o pesmama.

Inspiration

The 1944 novel Strange Fruit by author Lillian Smith, was said to have been inspired by Billie Holiday's version of the song.

The short film, Strange Fruit, written and directed by Christopher Browne. [1]

Seattle literary magazine the strange fruit is named after the song.

The opera "Strange Fruit" was inspired by the novel by Lillian Smith (above). A commissioned work, it premiered on June 15, 2007 at the Long Leaf Opera Festival [2]in Chapel Hill. Chandler Carter was the composer and Joan Ross Sorkin was the librettist.
