Saugatuck Township is a civil township of Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,590 at the 2000 census.

The cities of Saugatuck and Douglas are within the township, but are administratively autonomous.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 26.2 square miles (67.8 km²), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.4 km²) of it is land and 0.9 square miles (2.4 km²) of it (3.55%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,590 people, 1,581 households, and 937 families residing in the township. The population density was 142.2 per square mile (54.9/km²). There were 2,089 housing units at an average density of 82.7/sq mi (31.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.43% White, 0.42% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.25% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.12% of the population.

There were 1,581 households out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.7% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the township the population was spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.0 males.
