It was operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad between 1901–1982 and Seaboard System from 1982-1986. The railroad was purchased by the Gulf and Ohio Railways on July 28, 1986 and renamed to its current name. The purchase included the 7 mile Andalusia and Conecuh Railroad from Andalusia, Alabama to Gautt, Alabama. The line between Geneva, Alabama and Graceville, Florida was abandoned. The railroad to include 86 miles of trackage was purchased by its current owner Pioneer Railcorp on November 23, 1992. 36 miles of trackage from Georgiana, Alabama to Andalusia, Alabama was sold back to the Gulf and Ohio Railways and named Three Notch Railroad on June 11, 2001. The railroad abandoned 12 miles between Samson, Alabama and Geneva, Alabama the same year. The AF connects with Three Notch Railroad at Andalusia, Alabama. The railroad serves only one industry, the Alabama Farmers Co-Op, located at Opp, Alabama and stores railcars for other railroads. The railroad operates one EMD GP20 locomotive on an as needed basis.
