This is a competition to promote wiki culture among the student community of Bangladesh and recruit new Wikipedians to work for Wikiproject Bangladesh. A group of active wikipedians from Bangladesh as of December 2007 have organized this competition.

Who can Participate

Any student studying at the undergraduate level (HSC+ or A level+) or higher of Bangladesh is eligible to participate. This includes all degree colleges, university level institutions and universities, from grades 13-16.

How to participate

If you are qualified to participate and interested to do so, please take the following steps:

  1. Create a wikipedia account with a valid email address. (Not needed if you already have one). The email address is important because the same email address will be used for all competition related communications.
  2. Familiarize yourself with Wikipedia policies. A good place to start is: Wikipedia:Introduction.
  3. Select an article from Category:Bangladesh articles needing attention, on which you would like to work for the competition.
  4. Enlist your name in the list of participants below along with the name of the selected article. For example your entry may be:

NOTE: One individual should enlist only once and select one article other than articles selected by earlier competitors. Multiple enlistment and/or manipulation of other participant's enlistment entry may result in disqualification.

When is the last time for enrollment

Last date of enrollment was March 26, 2008. The organizing committee will soon announce the next steps in the competition.

Changing selection after first enlistment

If for any reason you would like to change your selected article, you can do that before the competition commencement date (March 26, 2008) as long as your new article of choice is from the article list and has not already been selected by another competitor.

How to start

Once you have enlisted yourself, it will be prudent to start some preparatory work for the upcoming competition. Only edits made after the formal commencement date will count as part of competition, so participants may not want to start editing their article of choice right away. However, preparation for the actual competition can continue which may include any or all of the following:

  • Gathering information about desired topic.
  • Collect the resources like books, journals, news articles, website, pictures about the topic.
  • Make a numbered list of information about the resources. Suppose for book you should make the numbered list with book name, author name, publisher, year of publish, edition, ISBN etc.
  • Read the resources and collect the information and do mark the information with proper reference number. If you find same information in more then one resource mark with all reference number.
  • To know what should insert in a article.
  • Do search for similar kind of articles.
  • Study the articles. You should care about intro, sections of the article, section titles, contents, caption of the pictures, visual style of the article etc.
  • Start writing at Wikipedia
  • Study the existing contents of the article.
  • If there is any reference in the article then these are bonus to you.
  • Putting your reference list at the discussion page, so that others can know from which sources you are using.
  • Discuss with others and ask help for collect sources/reference on particular information.
  • Work and edit on other similar or dissimilar topics of interest just to familiarize yourself with how it all works. Feedbacks that you'll recieve from the community will inevitably help you understand your strengths and weaknesses.

We encourage you to start work from beginning of enrollment, so that, you can get more time to collect the sources or references.

What will happen next

Starting from March 26, 2008 the organizers will review the list of interested participants and will decide any of the followings:

  1. To extend time of enrollment.
  2. To discard the competition for lack of sufficient participants (expected minimum is 10).
  3. To start the Competition.

The decisions will be announced shortly.

The competition

The first phase will last for 3 months starting from the date of announcement. During this time each participant should work on the selected article to promote it to Good Article or better even Featured Article status.

After the completion of this phase, if clear winners emerge then the results will be announced immediately. Otherwise the top 5 performers may be requested to compete in a second phase which would help to identify the best performer.

Regarding the selection of winner the decisions taken by the competition organizers will be the final.

Who will be judging

The organizing committee will also serve as the judging panel. The panel is chaired by a seasoned wikipedian and an admin on wikipedia.

The reward

The best "Deshipidian" identified from this competition will be entitled "Deshipidian 2008" and will be awarded a cash prize of Tk. 5,000/-. Four (4) runner-ups will be entitled to cash prize of Tk. 1,000/- each.
