During the Miocene, the planet began to see major changes in its climate. In the Oligocene, the earth's climate was much cooler. it is no supprise that a major 400,000 year long temperature depression is said to have occuyred in the Oligocene. Coelacanth's are known to inhabit very cold and oxygenated water, as seen in the waters off the coast of the Comoro Islands and in Indonesia. the Macropomoides Coelacanths probably inhabited similar conditions. A major climate change spelled the end of the Oligiocene and maked the beginning of the Miocene. the new epoch brought with it a climate swing which began to heat up the planet's surface and trigger a warm period. the Macropomoides, who depended on the cool living conditions of their habitat, were unable to adapt and went Extinct shortly after the beginning of the Miocene. supprisingly, it can be inferred that the current Coelacanth species,West Indian Ocean coelacanth (Latimeria chalumnae) and the Indonesian coelacanth (Latimeria menadoensis) appear to have survived the temperature change, safely preserving their populations up to the present.
