'''''Daughter of Fortune''''' (original Spanish title ''Hija de la fortuna'') is a novel by [[Isabel Allende]], and was chosen as an [[Oprah's Book Club]] selection in February 2000.
'''''The Little Mermaid''''' is a stage [[musical theatre|musical]] produced by [[Disney Theatrical]], based on the animated 1989 [[Disney]] film [[The Little Mermaid (1989 film)|of the same name]] and the classic story of ''[[The Little Mermaid]]'' by [[Hans Christian Andersen]]. The musical's book is by [[Doug Wright]], music by [[Alan Menken]] and lyrics by the late [[Howard Ashman]] (written for the film) and new lyrics by [[Glenn Slater]].

The musical had a pre-[[Broadway theatre|Broadway]] tryout in [[Denver, Colorado]] in September 2007, with Broadway previews beginning in November 2007 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, previously the home of [[Disney Theatrical]]'s ''[[Beauty and the Beast (musical)|Beauty and the Beast]]'', which closed in July [[2007]] to make way for the new production. ''The Little Mermaid'' opened on January 10, 2008.

==Plot==
<!--Please keep the synopsis as short and concise as possible.-->
===Act I===
The story opens with [[Prince Eric]], his adviser Grimsby and sailors aboard a ship at sea, discussing the "mythical" merfolk that supposedly live under the sea. Grimsby tries to tell Eric that he must return to court to fulfill his birthright as king. However, Eric hears a beautiful voice and commands it to be followed. ("Fathoms Below")

Deep on the ocean floor in the merfolk's kingdom, a concert in honor of a defeated coup d'etat by Ursula is underway, being performed by the daughters of [[Characters of Disney's The Little Mermaid#King Triton|Triton]] the sea king. King Triton's court composer, [[Sebastian (The Little Mermaid)|Sebastian]] has composed a song for girls to perform. ("Daughters of Triton") However the youngest daughter, Ariel, is not there for her solo, bringing the concert to a grinding halt. [[Ariel (The Little Mermaid)|Ariel]] has forgotten about the concert entirely, and is swimming around the surface, admiring her new found item, a fork. She reveals that she is fascinated with the human world. ("The World Above"). Together with her best friend Flounder, Ariel visits [[Characters of Disney's The Little Mermaid#Scuttle|Scuttle]] the seagull and his fellow seagulls to ask about the human things she's collected, and he explains them somewhat erroneously. ("Human Stuff")

Elsewhere, the sea witch [[Ursula (The Little Mermaid)|Ursula]] is planning revenge against her brother, King Triton. She explains that she was banished from the palace because she used black magic, and tells her minions [[Characters of Disney's The Little Mermaid#Flotsam and Jetsam|Flotsam and Jetsam]] to keep an eye on Ariel, whom she thinks will be the key to getting the crown and trident. ("I Want the Good Times Back")

When Ariel returns to the underwater kingdom, she is berated by King Triton, who is angered to learn that she has been on the surface as contact between merfolk and the human world is forbidden. Ariel rushes off, upset, and King Triton assigns Sebastian, whom Ariel made a laughingstock because of her absence at the concert, to watch over Ariel and make sure she doesn't get into any trouble. Ariel sits alone in her grotto, which contains her collection of human things, and sings about how she doesn't believe humans are so bad. ("Part of Your World")

Ariel and Flounder meet Scuttle at the surface to see Prince Eric's ship and the people on it up close. Grimsby tries to reason with Eric telling him he must find a bride and take his place as king. A storm suddenly hits, and Eric has fallen overboard. He almost drowns, but Ariel saves him and drags him to shore. Ariel realizes that she is falling in love with him, and vows to somehow find a way to be with him. ("Part of Your World" -(Reprise))

Ariel returns to her underwater home, and her changed behavior makes her sisters and Flounder suspect that she's fallen in love. ("She's in Love") On land, Eric is determined to the find the woman who saved his life, but the only clue he has is her voice. ("Her Voice") He and Grimsby come up with the idea of holding a ball where foreign princesses will sing to him in hopes that one will be the girl he's looking for.

King Triton learns that Ariel has saved a human, and confronts her about what happened to her mother. ("The World Above" -(Reprise)) As Ariel and Triton quarrel, Triton uses his trident to destroy Ariel's human collection. Sebastian arrives and tries to comfort Ariel. Furious with Sebastian for slipping out the truth to her father, Ariel decides to run away. Sebastian tries reason with Ariel by pointing out the wonders of the undersea world. ("Under the Sea") As all the sea creatures join in the jamboree, Ariel swims away with Flounder. As she tries to run away, she is stopped by Flotsam and Jetsam. They sweet talk her into seeking help from her Auntie Ursula ("Sweet Child").

Ariel goes to Ursula, who presents a deal: Ariel will be turned into a human for three days, during which she has to get the kiss of true love from Eric. If she does, she'll be human permanently; if not, her soul will belong to Ursula and she'll spend eternity in her "watery hell soaked lair." As payment for the deal, Ariel will have to give up her voice, which would stay safe in Ursula's magic shell. Ariel is unsure about this because of her father telling her that the shell was the fragile life source of Ursula's witchcraft. However, Ursula says it was something she carries stuff inside and she sticks it around her belt. ("Poor Unfortunate Souls") Ariel signs the agreement with the ink from her aunt's tentacles. She sings into the shell and swims up to the surface. During this time, Ursula's spell takes effect, and Ariel is transformed into a human.

===Act II===
Sebastian and Flounder bring Ariel, newly human and mute, to the shore. Scuttle and the seagulls give her a pep talk to bring her spirits up and get her used to her new legs("Positoovity"). Thinking Ariel is being attacked by seagulls, Eric chases them off. When Arel tries to speak with him, she realizes she cannot talk. Eric brings Ariel back to his palace, where the head mistress, Carlotta and the maids bathe and dress Ariel nicely for her night out with the prince. Ariel is fascinated by the human world she finds herself in and the maids wonder why Prince Eric would bring such a girl to the palace("Beyond My Wildest Dreams"). That night Chef Louis cooks dinner for Ariel, Grimsby, and Eric. He almost cooks Sebastian for the grand finale, but he manages to escape as Louis, the other chefs, and the maids start chasing after him. ("Les Poissons" / "Les Poissons" -(Reprise)) Later, Eric takes Ariel to the ballroom and teaches her to dance. ("One Step Closer"). Meanwhile, Ursula is anxiously waiting for the three days to end and sends Flotsam and Jetsam to hurry things along. ("I Want The Good Times Back" -(Reprise))

The next evening, after taking Ariel on a tour of the kingdom, Eric takes Ariel on a quiet boat ride through a lagoon. Sebastian and Scuttle watch anxiously waiting for them to kiss. Sebastian and some of the lagoon animals try to create a romantic atmosphere for Eric to kiss Ariel. ("Kiss The Girl") Just before they kiss, Flotsam and Jetsam give the boat an "electric shock" and swim away gloating. ("Sweet Child" -(Reprise)) As the second day ends, Sebastian gives Ariel a pep talk in order to help her get the prince the next day. Carlotta arrives to get Ariel ready for bed and tells her about the singing contest which is to be held the next day. Ariel wishes she could tell Eric everything, Triton worries about where his daughter has gone, Sebastian is concerned for Ariel since her time as a human is almost up, and Eric still dreams of finding the girl who saved him even though he doesn't want to lose Ariel ("If Only" - quartet). Afterwards, Sebastian returns to the sea and rehearses his apology and explanation to Triton. Sebastian and Flounder tell an angry King Triton about Ariel's deal with Ursula. Fearful for his daughter's life, Triton races off to find her.

On Ariel's last day as a human the contest takes place. All the foreign princesses sing to Eric to the tune of "Part of Your World" to see if he can recognize the girl he's looking for. ("The Contest") All of them fail to do so. Ariel chooses at that moment to dance for him, and Eric picks her. Ursula then appears, floods the ballroom, and tells Ariel that the sun has set and she has lost. Flotsam and Jetsam grab Ariel and take her back to the sea.

King Triton arrives to confront his sister and rescue Ariel, who has returned to her mermaid form. He agrees to take Ariel's place, and Ursula celebrates her victory as she claims the trident and declares herself queen. ("Poor Unfortunate Souls" -(Reprise)) She banishes Triton with a wave of the trident. Eric's ship arrives and Ursula uses the trident to raise the sea level higher, having Eric's interference out of the way. But while she's distracted, Ariel then grabs the magic shell, gains her voice back, and threatens to smash the shell. Terrified, Flotsam and Jetsam swim away. Ursula begins to sweet talk her niece, saying she can turn her human again and reunite her with her prince. Ariel starts to believe her and begins to hand the shell over. Believing the shell is within her grasp, Ursula tells Ariel that since they've proven the princess wasn't a "daddy's girl" anymore, Triton will rot on the ocean floor forever and Ariel will trust dear old Auntie instead. Furious, Ariel yanks the shell away and smashes it, which destroys Ursula. Triton reappears and is reunited with his daughter.

Triton soon realizes that he must let Ariel go and transforms her back into a human ("If Only" -(Reprise)). Ariel and Eric are reunited on the beach and Eric and Grimsby are introduced to King Triton. In honor of his daughter, Triton declares peace between the humans and merpeople. To celebrate the marriage of his daughter and the prince, Triton allows the humans and the merpeople to be united for one night. Ariel and Eric are married and sail away happily on a ship.("Finale")

This takes place in 1840s Chile. Eliza Sommers is a young [[Chilean]] girl raised and educated by [[English people|English]] [[Church of England|Anglican]] siblings Rose and Jeremy Sommers, and their sailor brother John Sommers, who were colonists living in the port of [[Valparaiso]], ever since they found her on their doorstep, and taught in the art of cooking by the [[Mapuche]] Indian Mama Fresia. Over most of Part 1, we read about her origins and upbringing, and her maturity. After listening to a story Miss Rose told her about her first love, Eliza falls in love with Joaquin Andieta, a young Chilean man who was concerned about his mother, living in poverty. The young couple have an affair, ultimately resulting in Eliza getting pregnant. Soon, news of [[gold]] being discovered in California reaches Chile, and Joaquin goes out to California in search of a fortune. Wanting to follow her lover, Eliza goes to California, with the help of her [[Han Chinese|Chinese]] [[zhong yi]] friend, Tao Chi'en, in the bowels of a ship headed by a [[Dutch people|Dutch]] [[Lutheran]] captain, Vincent Katz.

In the beginning of Part 2, we read about Tao's past, from his early life in poverty, to his apprenticeship to a master acupuncturist, and his ill-fated marriage to Lin, a young and pretty, but frail girl who dies after a brief marriage. Lin's spirit later comes in to help her widowed husband at crucial points for Tao in later parts of the book. During the journey to California, Eliza, due to her pregnancy, is frail and sick, and later suffers a miscarriage. As soon as Eliza and Tao set foot in [[San Francisco]], due to there being all men, Eliza wears a Chinese boy's [[cheongsam]]. Eliza sets up a successful Chilean restaurant, and Tao becomes a successful zhong yi. Tao, after seeing the greed and brothels in San Francisco, loses most of his faith in America. Eliza then sets on her journey to find Joaquin, using a male cowboy's disguise and the moniker Elias Andieta, and claiming to be Joaquin's brother. Meanwhile in Valparaiso, Rose and Jeremy are shocked to find that Eliza has disappeared. When John comes and asks about her whereabouts, Rose reveals a well-kept, shocking secret about him: John is Eliza's father, having had her with an unnamed Chilean woman. Having the feeling that his daughter went to [[California]], John sets sail for San Francisco.

==Main Characters==
Music by [[Alan Menken]]
{{Expand-section|date=June 2008}}
=====Eliza Sommers=====
Eliza Sommers is a headstrong, half Chilean, half English girl abandoned at birth at the home of the Sommers. She is adopted and raised in part by Rose Sommers and also by Mama Fresia, the Sommers' servant and cook. She has an excellent sense of smell and a very detailed and accurate memory.

=====Rose Sommers=====
'''<nowiki>*</nowiki>''' Lyrics by [[Howard Ashman]]

Incredibly beautiful, Rose Sommers never married after an affair at a young age with an opera singer ended. She has raised Eliza as her own, as though she did not wish to marry she wanted children.
'''''†''''' Lyrics by [[Howard Ashman]] and [[Glenn Slater]]

=====Jeremy Sommers=====
All Other Lyrics by Glenn Slater

Jeremy is the oldest of the Sommers. He is solid and stern, taking care to never show emotion. Jeremy and Rose live together under unspoken conditions where she takes care of the house and he provides necessities.

=====John Sommers=====
'''Note 1''': The songs "Where I Belong" and Ursula's reprise of "Her Voice" were cut from the musical after the out-of-town tryout in [[Denver]].

John is a captain of a ship and later a steamboat carrying supplies to California. He is a free-spirit and the "loosest" of the Sommers, enjoying good drinks and women. He travels to many places and brings back gifts for Rose and Eliza, after she is born.
'''Note 2''': The songs "[[Under the Sea]] (Reprise)" and "Les Poissons (Reprise)" are included on the original Broadway cast recording as separate tracks, though on the show's [[Playbill]] they are not mentioned as reprises.

=====Mama Fresia=====
==Differences between the Play and Film==
;Plot
* The shark chase sequence that introduces Ariel and Flounder has been removed.
* Ursula's magic shell is just a large nautilus shell, whereas in the 1989 film it is a necklace.
* Ursula is King Triton's sister. Although this had been planned for the movie, it was left out eventually.
* Ursula and Triton are equal, and upon the death of their father, [[Poseidon]], Ursula received the magic shell while her brother received the trident. Each ruled half the oceans, until Ursula's cruelty and use of black magic led to Triton deposing her and assuming full reign over the entire ocean world.
* The "Under the Sea" sequence has been moved to after King Triton destroys Ariel's collection of human things rather than before.
* The magic shell allows Ursula to spy on people, so she does not "use" Flotsam and Jetsam's eyes as in the film.
* Ursula's alter ego Vanessa and Eric's sheepdog Max are not included.
* In place of the Vanessa subplot, there is a contest with foreign princesses singing songs to see if Eric can recognize any of them to have Ariel's voice.
* Ariel does not receive her voice back until after she is turned back into a mermaid.
* It is Ariel, not Eric who destroys Ursula by breaking the magic shell.

Mama Fresia is the cook for the Sommers. Nobody pays much attention to her except for Eliza who benefits from her cooking skills as well as superstitions. Eventually Mama Fresia helps Eliza run away and then disappears herself.

Daughter of Fortune (original Spanish title Hija de la fortuna) is a novel by Isabel Allende, and was chosen as an Oprah's Book Club selection in February 2000.

Plot summary

This takes place in 1840s Chile. Eliza Sommers is a young Chilean girl raised and educated by English Anglican siblings Rose and Jeremy Sommers, and their sailor brother John Sommers, who were colonists living in the port of Valparaiso, ever since they found her on their doorstep, and taught in the art of cooking by the Mapuche Indian Mama Fresia. Soon, news of gold being discovered in California reaches Chile, and Joaquin goes out to California in search of a fortune. Wanting to follow her lover, Eliza goes to California, with the help of her Chinese zhong yi friend, Tao Chi'en, in the bowels of a ship headed by a Dutch Lutheran captain, Vincent Katz.

As soon as Eliza and Tao set foot in San Francisco, due to there being all men, Eliza wears a Chinese boy's cheongsam. Having the feeling that his daughter went to California, John sets sail for San Francisco.

Part 3 finds Eliza broke after still trying to search for Joaquin, she occasionly sends letters to Tao describing what she sees in her journey. Although she has fallen out of love with Joaquin,she cannot stop journeying. In an outskirt town, Eliza meets up with Joe Bonecrusher's travelling caraven of prostitutes and ends up travelling with them as cook and piano player. The members of the caravan believe Eliza to be a homosexual man,a disguise which she takes up much to the frustration of Babalu,the caravan's bodyguard. Eliza stays with the group during the winter as they settle in a small town. During this time, Tao moves to San Francisco to save up money to move back to China. He surprises himself when he realises he misses Eliza's company and is consoled when he begins receiving her letters. John Sommers in his search for Eliza, comes across Jacob Todd, an old suitor of Rose's who is now a journalist known as Jacob Freemont. Freemont promises that he will look out for any sign of Eliza. Freemont writes articles about the famous bandit Joaquin Murieta, whose description matches Eliza's lover. Tao comes and finds Eliza at Joe Bonecrusher's and Eliza comes back to San Francisco with him. They set up a network to help young Chinese prostitutes escape and rehabilitate with the help of friends. Eventually Jacob Freemont is able to pass word to the Sommers that Eliza is alive,who was previously thought dead. Tao and Eliza live together and eventually form a relationship. At the end of the novel, Joaquin Murieta is shot dead and his preserved head is showcased in San Francisco. Eliza and Tao go to see if the man was really Joaquin Andieta.

Main Characters

Eliza Sommers

Eliza Sommers is a headstrong, half Chilean, half English girl abandoned at birth at the home of the Sommers. She is adopted and raised in part by Rose Sommers and also by Mama Fresia, the Sommers' servant and cook. She has an excellent sense of smell and a very detailed and accurate memory.

Rose Sommers

Incredibly beautiful, Rose Sommers never married after an affair at a young age with an opera singer ended. She has raised Eliza as her own, as though she did not wish to marry she wanted children.

Jeremy Sommers

Jeremy is the oldest of the Sommers. He is solid and stern, taking care to never show emotion. Jeremy and Rose live together under unspoken conditions where she takes care of the house and he provides necessities.

John Sommers

John is a captain of a ship and later a steamboat carrying supplies to California. He is a free-spirit and the "loosest" of the Sommers, enjoying good drinks and women. He travels to many places and brings back gifts for Rose and Eliza, after she is born.

Mama Fresia

Mama Fresia is the cook for the Sommers. Nobody pays much attention to her except for Eliza who benefits from her cooking skills as well as superstitions. Eventually Mama Fresia helps Eliza run away and then disappears herself.

Tao Chi'en

Tao Chi'en is a shanghied zhong yi (physician) working as a cook on John Sommers ship. Once he has been dismissed from the captain's duty, Eliza comes to him to ask for him to help her follow her lover Joaqín Andieta to California. Tao Chi'en smuggles Eliza aboard a ship and keeps her there for the rest of the journey. He takes care of her when she suffers from a miscarriage and saves her life. The two remain friends for life.

Joaquin Andieta

Joaquin is a young man who works for Jeremy Sommers, though is not known by name by him. He spends time with Jacob Todd talking about philosophy and freedom. He is a loyal and hard worker, trying his best to bring his mother into a better life. Joaquin meets Eliza when delivering something to the Sommers' house. They meet multiple times to talk which leads to an affair. When Joaquin is struck by gold fever he steals money and heads for California.

Jacob Todd/Freemont

Jacob is brought to Chile by a bet that he couldn't sell a specific number of Bibles in 3 months. Once he arrives he is distracted by the resisting Rose Sommers and lives off of money the local church gives him for his "mission work". Once he is unveiled as a fraud, Jacob takes off with what' left of his reputation. He ends up in California working as a journalist, though no more honest, and becomes famous for his pieces, especially those on the elusive bandit Joaquin Murieta.
