Location of Gandesa

Gandesa is the capital of the comarca of Terra Alta, in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. Gandesa is 363 metres above sea level. Its population in 2006 was 3,090.

Gandesa has a church with unusual and interesting sculptures on the Romanesque porch. An article on the subject can be seen here :

Gandesa was at the centre of fighting in the Summer of 1938, when Republican forces crossed the Ebro in an attempt to throw back the Nationalists armies of General Franco.

On December 23 1948 an Iberia Douglas DC-3 crashed in bad weather near Gandesa killing all 27 occupants.

People call this town "the ass of Catalunya" not only because of its position, also because the deficient sistem of organization of the municipality.
