Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility (牧場物語 やすらぎの樹, Bokujō Monogatari: Yasuragi no Ki, official translation is yet to be announced) (also known as Harvest Moon: Tree of Peace) is a farming simulation video game by Marvelous Interactive released exclusively for Nintendo's Wii console.[1] It is the first title in the Harvest Moon series originally developed for the Wii and is described by the developer's Japanese Web site as a "heart warming life simulation."[2]

Story

At the beginning of the game, the player is on a ship going to the island and then chooses to be either a boy or girl resident on this island that houses a goddess and a tree. The tree suddenly dries up, and the goddess disappears. The player must restore the magic of the island and bring back the goddess and her tree.

The player starts out the first few days of the game living in the local inn before he or she is given his or her own farm. During this period, the player is given time to learn the controls through part-time jobs, and introduce themselves to the villagers. A few days later the mayor issues the player a plot of land. Then the farming begins.

To revive the tree (the main story through the game), the player must go though a series of steps to help the Harvest Sprites create rainbows and collect certain badges. But first the player must find a few pieces of a quilt that tells the story of this tree and how to make the rainbows, on the island. The mayor, Hamilton, has one piece and so does his son, Gill. The player will begin to start collecting the ingredients to make these rainbows. Once all rainbows are created, the tree will revive and the goddess will return.[3] [4] After which the game continues indefinitely. The player is also given the choice to start over as "his or her child" with the same tools and additional money. All the villagers and spouse relations are reset.

Livestock and poultry

A video released on IGN on 3 November 2006 shows that Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility includes cows, sheep, goats, chickens, a dog, and a white cat.

Further confirmation reveals that the livestock/poultry are your typical Harvest Moon animals (i.e. horse, sheep, cow, chickens, ducks) along with ostriches, goats, and silkworms. There are also wild animals available for adoption: monkeys, bears, medium sized wild dogs, boars, pandas, penguins, turtles, cats, weasels, rabbits, squirrels, baby bears, and a raccoon dog.

In order to acquire wild animals, the player must attain 6 hearts. This can be done by visiting the animal frequently and giving the animal its favorite treats. Like in past Harvest Moon games, the animals can die of old age. However, this will not affect the heart levels of the rest of the townspeople unless the animal dies of neglect. Animals can be shown and bred. The better it does in shows, the more its resale value is.

There are festivals and other contests the players animal can take part in, in order to increase its worth.

Finally, you can also breed horses, so if you want a horse farm, you may do so.

Reception

Currently Nintendo Power has been the only mainstream source to review the game. It was given a 65%, and Nintendo Power felt, "The problem is that the game feels phoned in, from the tacked-on motion controls to the scan tutorial system that assumed you've already played every other Harvest Moon game." [Oct 2008, p.90]

Sequel

A sequel planned for a 2008 release in Japan under the name "Waku Waku Animal March" is currently under development by Marvelous Entertainment. It is set for the Wii, and the same character designer is working for it.[5]
