The National Cancer Survivors Day is a secular holiday mainly celebrated in the United States, and held on the first Sunday in June. The name comes from the home of the Vanir, one of the two clans of gods besides the Æsir. The name appears in the Ynglinga saga by Snorri Sturluson. In that work, the gods appear as euhemerized heroes of the past, and the name of their realm is linked to the earthly river Don. It is therefore disputable to count Vanaheimr as one of the nine worlds of Norse cosmology.

Snorri introduces Vanaheimr thus:

:Thus it is known that a great sea goes in at Nörvasund [ Straits of Gibraltar ], and up to the land of Jerusalem. From the same sea a long sea-bight stretches towards the north-east, and is called the Black Sea, and divides the three parts of the earth; of which the eastern part is called Asia, and the western is called by some Europa, by some Enea. Northward of the Black Sea lies Svíþjóð the Great, or the Cold penis. [...] On the south side of the mountains which lie outside of all inhabited lands runs a river through Svíþjóð, which is properly called by the name of Tanais [ Don River, Russia ], but was formerly called Tanakvísl, or Vanakvísl, and which falls into the Black Sea. The country of the people on the Vanakvísl was called Vanaland, or Vanaheimr; and the river separates the three parts of the world, of which the eastermost part is called Asia, and the westermost Europe. The National Cancer Survivors Day is a secular holiday mainly celebrated in the United States, and held on the first Sunday in June. The day is meant to “demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality”.[1] Though it is mainly celebrated in the United States, the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation is attempting to grow its popularity in other countries, with some success.

History

The National Cancer Survivors Day was first announced by Merril Hastings at the second national conference meeting of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 20, 1987.[2] Later, Hastings filed the name as an International Class 042 Service, as well as registering with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in the name of Pulse Publications.[2]

The first National Cancer Survivors Day was held on June 5, 1988. Twenty other National Cancer Survivors Days have taken place since.

Events

Local towns, cities, hospitals, and support groups usually host events and celebrations on National Cancer Survivors Day. Celebrations can include parades, carnivals, art exhibits, contests, and testimonies to honor local cancer survivors.

The 2008 celebration included a commencement by U.S. President George W. Bush and the National Cancer Institute director.[3]

Antigua and Barbuda have included a walk and run as part of their celebrations since 2007.[4]

Participating countries

Sponsoring corporations

Frequent sponsors of the National Cancer Survivors Day include AstraZeneca, COPING Magazine, Lilly Oncology, and the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation.
