The Holy Island (Bengali: Sagar Sangamey) is a 1959 Bengali film directed by Debaki Bose. It was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival.[1]
Plot
This is a pedestrian and uninvolving Indian drama about the struggles of a young widow and a rebellious girl. The essentially two-character story starts with a shipwreck. The widow and the girl are among the passengers traveling to the Holy Island when their ship goes down, and the widow saves the girl from drowning. Because the girl is not exactly endearing, the widow has no desire to develop any sort of a relationship with her, a resolve that does not last long. In spite of herself, she finds she cannot help but mother the motherless child.
