The Bone & Joint Journal, formerly known as The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (British Volume), is published by The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery, a registered charity in the UK (No. 209299) with the objective of 'The advancement and improvement of education in orthopaedic surgery and allied branches of surgery and the diffusion of knowledge of new and improved methods of teaching and practising orthopaedic surgery in all its branches'.[1]

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery [Br] was first published in February 1948 and shared the title The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery with the American Volume of JBJS. The two volumes were editorially and financially independent. In September 2011, JBJS (Am) and JBJS (Br) reached a joint agreement on future, independent operations. This new agreement now gives each Journal more autonomy over its future direction and strategy.

The Bone & Joint Journal is the flagship publication under the Bone & Joint umbrella, which also includes Bone & Joint Research and Bone & Joint360.[2] Orthopaedic Proceedings is a supplement with BJJ that publishes abstracts from major orthopaedic meetings around the world online.[3]

The Bone & Joint Journal is the official publication of the following national and international Associations: British Orthopaedic Association, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, Australian Orthopaedic Association and Sociedade Brasileira de Orthopedia e Traumatologia.

The journal is indexed in MEDLINE. According to the Journal Citation Reports, it has a 2014 impact factor of 1.961.[4] This is the first Impact Factor for the journal under its current title and hence only includes citations to articles published in a single year (2013). The former title is also listed with an Impact Factor of 3.309 (which only includes citations to articles published in 2012). The combined Impact Factor (based on citations to articles published in 2012 and 2013) is calculated as 2.638.

Notes

  1. ^ Due to the name change that took effect in January 2013, both titles are officially listed with separate Impact Factors for 2014. The calculation for new title – The Bone & Joint Journal – only includes citations for articles published in 2013 and its listed Impact Factor is 1.961. The old title – The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (British Volume) – only includes citations for articles published in 2012 in its calculation, and has a value of 3.309 (which will be its last before removal in 2015). The combined 2014 Impact Factor for the journal is 2.638
