The College has received U.S Navy qualification to educate enlisted nuclear engineers, and it has been nationally recognized as an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) institution. SUNY Maritime's training ship, the Empire State VI also receieved the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration's (MARAD) award of Merit, better known as the Maritime "M" Award. Maritime College’s graduating classes enjoy a 100% success rate in obtaining positions that garner above average salaries.

The oldest and largest maritime school in the country, SUNY Maritime College is a four-year college located at historic Fort Schuyler in Throggs Neck, New York. SUNY Maritime offers undergraduate degree programs in Engineering, Business Administration/Marine Transportation, Marine Environmental Science, Humanities, International Transportation and Trade, and a Master’s degree in International Transportation Management. Maritime students pursuing their Coast Guard license participate in three Summer Sea Terms aboard Empire State VI and visit numerous international ports of call. Travel on the College’s 565-foot Training Ship Empire State VI is an essential component of the Maritime experience. Each summer, cadets travel across the world, learning about the maritime industry and the operations of the ship, while gaining exposure to international cultures. The Summer Sea Term provides students with opportunities for hands-on experience and practical training to compliment classroom learning.

Student life in the Regiment of Cadets enhances the College’s unique learning experience which is nationally recognized for its academic and tactile approach to education by integrating the Maritime curriculum with the regiment component. This structured community emphasizes responsible citizenship and self-discipline, and maximizes opportunities for exercising leadership. Participation in the Regiment is optional for some programs.

Maritime College is located on a 55-acre scenic waterfront property on the outskirts of New York City on the Throggs Neck peninsula. Fort Schuyler houses the Stephen B. Luce Library, Maritime Industry Museum, and the Center for Simulation and Marine Operations, including a Bridge Simulator, Electronics Navigation, and the Radar Simulator. The Fort is flanked by modern dining halls, residence halls, lecture halls, recreational and athletic facilities, and science and engineering laboratories.

History of Maritime College

SUNY Maritime College Then

The State University of New York Maritime College’s impressive history began over 125 years ago. In response industry demand, more Americans were being encouraged to enter maritime careers. The Governor of New York applied for a training ship and, on December 14, 1874, the USS St. Mary’s arrived in New York harbor and became the home of the first commercial maritime institution in the United States. The initial 26 students aboard the St. Mary’s, known then as the New York Nautical School, became the first class of what has evolved into the State University of New York Maritime College.

As the school prospered, it became a land-based, degree granting college, finding a permanent home in 1934 at the Maritime College’s present Fort Schuyler campus. The College is one of the original institutions incorporated into the State University of New York system in 1948 and was the first of its kind to enroll women in 1972.

International By Design

Few industries are as multinational as the business of shipping. A Greek ship owner may own a vessel, time chartered to an American company, and sub-chartered to a Chinese trader. The vessel’s hull is insured by Lloyd’s syndicates, entered in a Norwegian P & I Club, and manned by Russian officers and Philippine crew. The chartered voyage may touch several of the world’s seaports. The possibilities are endless. Which of these possibilities provides you with an exciting and rewarding career opportunity?

Exports and imports, the international movement of goods, services, labor, business enterprise, investment funds, and technology, have reached unprecedented levels. Businesses both small and large seek to take advantage of these opportunities.

The College's primary ship, Empire State VI, a 565 foot (172 m) vessel driven by a 17,000 horsepower (13 MW) steam turbine engine, is the best-equipped training ship in the United States. Originally built as a break-bulk cargo freighter for States Lines, it was converted by the Maritime Administration and delivered to the College for use as a training ship in 1990. The Empire State is host to cadet watches and work parties during the academic year, and departs each May with the college's cadets on board for "Summer Sea Term," a two-month training voyage.

The college also opperates the USNS Stalwart.

Maritime Athletics

Throggs Neck, NY – NCAA Division III institutions are witnessing an unprecedented facility boom within its athletic programs. This “arms race” within Division III is driven by the desire to enhance the student-athlete experience, increase the institution’s recognition and provide facilities that will benefit its student, staff and college community as a whole. Maritime College embracing the importance of improving its athletic and recreation facilities is in the final stages of an independent facility assessment, with the guidance of NACDA Consulting, to develop a comprehensive athletic facility plan.

The 23-varsity sport athletic program is led by athletic director Dr. William E. Martinov, Jr., who stated “we are committed to the philosophy of providing athletic and recreational facilities that complements the storied history and rich tradition of this scenic waterfront campus. I have been quite impressed with the collaboration from our campus leaders, who have a collective care and concern for the entire college community, not simply athletics. This collective effort will be the single most important factor to the success of implementing our plan.”

SUNY Maritime Athletics

The initial phase of the process, the facility assessment, was received from NACDA Consulting by the athletic department on May 1. This first step, of the well-defined process, will provide an assessment of current facilities, a list of prioritized recommendations and estimated cost of facility construction and improvements.

Maritime has already undertaken significant steps to improve its athletic and recreation facilities in the past few years. Reinhart Field, which is home to seven varsity sports, has received Astro Play turf and new lights and is set to have bleachers and a scoreboard installed this summer. Riesenberg Hall, the focal point of Maritime athletics, has received equipment upgrades to its weight and fitness center. The College is in the process of developing a comprehensive waterfront facility plan, which will greatly benefit the College’s illustrious sailing and crew programs.

“Our administration has offered its unwavering enthusiasm, support and selective resources to improve our facilities to make Maritime one of the elite programs not only in the Skyline Conference but in the SUNY system highlighting the importance of life-long fitness and competitive athletics,” added Martinov.

Maritime, which reinstituted its football program this past year, has also recently added women’s soccer and lacrosse and has seen the immediate effects on admissions. “We have seen an increase in applications and our admission recruiters have received positive feedback with regards to adding our new sport programs” stated Deirdre Whitman, Maritime’s vice president of enrollment management and campus life.

The next step, once the facility assessment is completed, will be to begin the process of implementing the recommendations provided in the analysis. Martinov is hopeful that Maritime alums will also support the initiative to improve the athletic and recreation facilities. “Support from both the College and SUNY administration is, and has been, ultra-important to our recent progress. But, it is also imperative that our alumni feel a sense of pride and ownership of alma mater in our efforts to make Maritime College athletics and recreational facilities a leader within Division III.”

Maritime College ~ State University of New York, located in Throggs Neck, NY, is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Skyline Conference. Currently Maritime sponsors 23 Varsity programs, 13 Men’s and 10 Women’s, and has an enrollment of 1,100.
