a la

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

à la , completely à la mode de / du ... ( French for "after the manner of / des ...") is a group of particles borrowed from French in the 18th to 19th centuries , which describes certain methods of preparation of dishes (in kitchen language called garnishes ).

The expression can also be found in relation to art and literature and means "in the style of ..." or "in the manner / technique ...", in this sense it comes from the Italian ( alla , "in the manner", "in the style" ), as alla natura 'according to nature, naturalistic ', alla maniera [di] ... / à la manière (for example alla maniera Francese 'in the French style', cf. manner ), or alla pittoresco 'picturesque' (already in Vasari and Uccello , early 16th century), later narrowed to 'in the style of ...'.

In music, alla is used in alla breve (short for tactus alla breve in the sense of "straight time", 2/2 time) or in expressions such as alla marcia (in the manner of a march), alla polacca (in the manner of a Polonaise ), alla tedesca (in the style of the waltz or German dance ), alla turca (in the style of Turkish music ), alla zingarese (in the style of gypsy music ) etc.
