Álvar Fáñez , also written Háñez , († April 1114 in Segovia ) was a Castilian nobleman in the late 11th and early 12th centuries.

In March 1086 Álvar finished on behalf of King Alfonso VI. of León-Castile took over the rule of the Amirids in Valencia and installed Yahya al-Qadir as vassals in their place . During the invasion of the Iberian Peninsula by the Almoravids in 1091, Álvar was sent out with an army to support the besieged Seville , but suffered a defeat in a battle at Almodóvar del Río against Sir ibn Abi Bakr . On February 13, 1099, Álvar was first documented in the office of mayor ( alcalde ) of Toledo . On May 29, 1108 he fought in the disastrous battle of Uclés, in which the Crown Prince Sancho Alfónsez was killed. Álvar himself was one of the few who was able to escape from the battlefield and organize the defense of the Upper Tagus Valley . On July 22, 1109 he was in León one of the documentary witnesses of the first document issued by Queen Urraca , which he signed as the "Duke of Toledo" (Toletule dux) , which identifies him as the military commander in chief of the city and the surrounding area. In the fight against the Almoravids, however, he had to accept the loss of the strategically important Oreja castle in 1113 . In April 1114 Álvar was killed in Segovia during a popular uprising.

Álvar was married to Mayor Pérez († after April 23, 1148), a daughter of Count Pedro Ansúrez , with whom he had two daughters:

  • Eilo Álvarez († after 1156); 1. ∞ with Rodrigo Fernández de Castro, 2. ∞ with Count Ramiro Fróilaz.
  • Urraca Álvarez (†?); ∞ with Count Rodrigo Vélaz.

As a literary figure, Álvar Fáñez has entered the Cantar de Mio Cid , where he appears as a loyal friend of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ("El Cid") . In the historical film El Cid (1961) the role of "Fanez" is played by the Italian actor Massimo Serato .
