Essential water

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As essential water , peeled or aromatic water referred to distilled water, the essential oils are added. A distinction must be made between the so-called hydrolates , which are obtained as a by-product in the steam distillation of essential oils or are specifically obtained as the main product. They contain the water-soluble components of the distillation process as well as essential oils in small traces.

Manufacture and extraction

Essential waters are obtained by distillation in the manufacture of essential oils . Sometimes, however, they are also prepared as the main product by removing more distillate from the same quantity of vegetable matter.

If the plant substances are poor in essential oil, the once distilled water must be repeatedly withdrawn over several portions of the same and then differentiated in trade z. B. Aqua naphae simplex , duplex and triplex .

The richer such waters are in essential oil, the better they can be kept. The essential waters are often made with the addition of alcohol and are then not only more durable, but also able to absorb more essential oil. The essential waters have to be kept in tightly closed containers in a very cool place. For aroma care and therapy, the hydrolates are more suitable, which are only mixed with alcohol for the purpose of shelf life. They are usually in the acidic pH range and can be stored in a cool place for 12–16 months.

use

They are used in medicine , perfumery and liquor manufacture .

The production of orange blossom, rose, bitter almond and cherry laurel water is an important industry in southern France as well as in part of Sardinia.
