Åsvær

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Åsvær is a small group of islands around 15 to 20 km off the coast of northern Norway . It belongs to the municipality of Dønna in Helgeland in the province of Nordland .

At the end of the 19th century , the archipelago became important as one of the most productive fishing spots in Europe, where over 200,000 tons of herring (so-called “northern large herring ”) were caught every year in December by around 10,000 fishermen in two to three weeks . The rest of the year the islands were only inhabited by a few families. Åsvær is now uninhabited all year round.

The Åsvær light station, built in 1876, is of particular importance. Today's fire station consists of a conically shaped cast iron tower that replaced the original beacon in 1910, which was finally abandoned in 1917 after a storm. The tower stands on a base made of carved stone. The ruins of the building of the former fire station still stand in the vicinity of the tower. The coordinates of the lighthouse are: 66 ° 16 '0 "  N , 12 ° 18' 0"  O coordinates: 66 ° 16 '0 "  N , 12 ° 18' 0 '  O . The beacon station is a listed building.
