Æthelstan (Sussex)

Sussex in Anglo-Saxon times

Æthelstan (also Aethelstan, Athelstan ) was a subregulus (sub-king) of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex .

Æthelstan is known only through a single charter dated to the year 714 , the dating of which may be incorrect and is also ascribed to the time around 717/724. Its origin is unknown. He was married to Æthelthryth, who carried the title regina (queen). He presumably ruled as sub-king in the eastern part of Sussex. The date of his death is unknown. In the years 722 and 725 the "Oberkönig" Ine von Wessex led campaigns against Sussex, where the exiled Ætheling (about "Prince") Ealdberht had found admission. After 733 Æthelberht followed as King of Sussex.
