The École dauphinoise is a group of landscape painters who gathered around the painter Jean Achard in the second half of the 19th century .

Achard had got to know the Barbizon School , a painting colony from his colleague Théodore Rousseau , and wanted to design his École dauphinoise based on this model. All artists rejected the established salon painting and preferred the realistic representation of open-air painting .

It is named after the Dauphiné landscape .
