École des Hospitalières Saint-Gervais
The École des Hospitalières Saint-Gervais in the Marais district of Paris was the first Jewish school in the city. It was founded in 1819 and set up in 1846 in the premises of a former butcher's shop at 10 rue des Hospitalières Saint-Gervais. The school building from the first quarter of the 19th century has been classified as a Monument historique since 1970 .
In 1833 the school was recognized by the state and in 1880 it was adopted by the city of Paris as a public school. The Saturday classes at that time were not held because the majority of the students came from Jewish families and the Sabbath is a day of rest for the Jews.
On July 16, 1942, 165 Jewish students from this school were arrested with their parents during the so-called Rafle du Vélodrome d'Hiver and a few days later deported to the extermination camps in Eastern Europe .
Today there is a municipal élémentaire (primary school) in the building.
