The Église du Sacré-Cœur et Notre-Dame de Lourdes is a sacred building in the Belgian city of Liège . The building in the Cointe district is part of the Mémorial Interallié , a memorial to the First World War . The church is often referred to as a basilica , although it never received that title. The reason for this is the imposing and unusual neo-Byzantine architectural style.
history
After the First World War, Liège was chosen as the site for the construction of a memorial to honor the Allied fallen. It was built according to the plans of the architect Joseph Smolderen. Work began in 1928 and ended in 1936. The church was consecrated in the same year.
The church was profaned in 2010 and became part of the Walloon cultural heritage in 2011 . The church has been for sale since May 2011.
