The Étang de Vaccarès is a shallow salty beach lake in the center of the Camargue countryside in southern France . Its size (about 6500 hectares) and depth (on average 50 centimeters, rarely more than 2 meters) vary depending on the weather.

The lake provides habitat and food for many migratory birds and is also home to the greater flamingos characteristic of the Camargue . Since 1927 it has been part of a 13,117 hectare nature reserve (French: Réserve nationale de Camargue ), which in turn has been part of a nature reserve covering almost the entire Camargue since 1970.

According to popular belief, the lakeshore is said to have been the place of residence of the legendary bête du Vaccarès , a pan-like hybrid of man and goat. This mythological background formed the basis of a story published in 1926 in a Provencal - French edition ( La Bèstio dóu Vacarés in Provencal , La bête du Vaccarès in French ) by the Provencal poet Joseph d'Arbaud .
