The Étang du Stock (German: Stockweiher ) is a body of water in the French region of Grand Est , in the Moselle department , near Sarrebourg . It covers an area of more than 700 hectares and is 257 meters above sea level.
Its existence can be traced back to the 14th century. However, it used to be much smaller than it is today: around 1900 the area was around 360 hectares.
It has served as a feeding pond for the Saar Canal since 1920. The water scarcity of the canal, which had a particular effect in dry years, made it necessary to provide additional water from the stock pond. The capacity has been increased to around 18 million m³. The area increased accordingly. The Saar Canal crosses the pond on a dam that divides the water surface into a main part in the west and the Kleiner Stockweiher in the east. A passage in the dam (near Les-Trois-Ponts ) ensures the exchange of water between the two pond sections .
The resort of Rhodes is on the west bank . The Stockweiher is also a popular destination for vacationers from Saarland, which is relatively close to the border .
The local sailing clubs offer sailing courses for children and young people.
