Étienne Martin Saint-Léon (* 1860 , † 1934 ) was a French lawyer (Docteur en droit), historian , economist and academic librarian .

Professional career

Martin Saint-Léon was “Conservateur de la bibliothèque” at the “ Musée Social ”. Founded in 1894, less of a museum than a research establishment, it had a significant impact on French politics at the time, advocating social reform.

As his numerous publications show, Martin Saint-Léon was able to work independently and scientifically at the Musee. At that time he was considered the historian of the French guilds. Another field were the modern professional associations, coalitions and business associations, trusts and cartels , of which he saw the guilds as forerunners.

Martin Saint-Léon was one of the first among the French specialists to adopt the German term “ cartel” in 1903 , similar to Arthur Raffalovich : For him, the French “Comptoirs” and “Ententes” were also cartels and nothing different from them. On the other hand, he separated the trusts from the cartels.
