Étoilé (from French : étoilé , starry ) is a free GNUstep -based desktop environment that has not been further developed since 2016 . Its structure is modular and designed to provide a resource-saving desktop environment that is easy to use. Furthermore, it should be a user interface that is suitable for both small devices, such as PDAs , as well as larger ones, such as desktop computers, and with the uniformity achieved thereby reduces the number of surfaces that users of such devices have to get used to.

design

Concept for the finished desktop

One of Étoilé's underlying ideas is to focus on document orientation. This means that the entire desktop environment should present itself more like a single harmonious application for all purposes and less as a collection of programs that may even display one and the same process differently and thus confuse the user. In order to achieve this, one wants to use so-called services - that is, modular applications that work together much more strongly than was previously the case. In terms of appearance, Étoilé is reminiscent of Mac OS X with its dock and central menu bar.

Window manager

Since Étoilé runs on a system that uses an X11 graphics system, a window manager is required. So far, the GNU Window Maker performed this task on GNUstep-based desktops . Since this is not based on GNUstep itself, but on WINGs (“WINGs is not GNUstep”), users are faced with the problem that the GNU Window Maker behaves differently than an original GNUstep program. For example, settings relating to the appearance, such as font smoothing on the screen, must be made twice. Since this contradicts the principle of a user interface that is as clear as possible and also leads to an unattractive constellation of duplications for programmers, it was decided to develop a new window manager called " Azalea ", which is a real GNUstep application.

Portability

Because Étoilé is based on GNUstep, the development effort for programs and the work required for porting them to the corresponding platforms should be reduced. Furthermore, the use of the OpenStep -compliant GNUstep- integrated development environment enables fast porting of programs written for Mac OS X with Cocoa or Objective-C .

The Étoilé project cooperated with the GNUstep project and also the Backbone project. It provides frameworks, UI guidelines and documentation to make it easier for GNUstep developers to program Étoilé-compliant services (corresponds to applications).
