Ólafur Rafnsson

Ólafur Eðvarð Rafnsson (born April 7, 1963 - June 19, 2013 in Geneva ) was an Icelandic sports official and basketball player . Most recently, he was President of the continental basketball association FIBA Europe and Chairman of the National Olympic Committee of his home country.

Ólafur Eðvarð Rafnsson won 1988 as a basketball player with the Icelandic club Haukar Hafnarfjörður its first and at the time of his death only national championship. He also ran a total of seven times for the Icelandic national team. After graduating from the University of Iceland in 1990, he became a lawyer and was chairman of the Icelandic National Basketball Federation from 1996 to 2006. In 2006 he was elected to the 25-member council of the continental basketball association FIBA ​​Europe. He also took over the chairmanship of the National Olympic Committee of Iceland. In 2010 he was elected President of the European continental association FIBA ​​Europe for a four-year term. Ólafur Eðvarð Rafnsson died unexpectedly at the age of 50 during a stay in Geneva on the occasion of the opening of the new headquarters of the world association FIBA . He left behind his wife Gerður and three children.
